Winegrowing, local history and routes through the landscape offer various ways to enjoy a stay in Torroja Del Priorat. Would you like to focus on a guided tasting, the church’s architectural history or one of the described routes? Your answer can help determine the purpose and dates of your trip.
Wine and local events
The wines of Torroja Del Priorat are protected by the DOC Priorat designation of origin. Terroir al LĂmit offers three exclusive guided tasting experiences in the village. Enquiries and bookings are available in Spanish and English. Celler AixalĂ i Alcait is another local connection to winegrowing: this small family winery was founded in 2005. So, alongside a specific guided experience, you can also learn about the history of a family business and the protected origin of the wines.
Nit de Vins combines a public wine tasting with a small arts and crafts market. The town council holds the festival on the third Saturday in August, and the village’s wineries take part. If you plan to time your trip around Nit de Vins, check the exact event date in advance. The local festival calendar also includes the large bonfire at l’Era during Nit de Sant Joan.
Church, organ and local history
The parish church of Sant Miquel Arcà ngel was built between 1766 and 1767. Its neoclassical design also features Baroque elements. The church is designated a Cultural Asset of Local Interest (BCIL) and is also included in the Catalan Cultural Heritage Inventory. The church has an organ with its own, somewhat later history: French organ builder Jean Pierre Cavaillé constructed it around 1800. Its design combines French Romantic and Catalan elements. The restored organ is listed in the Organ Catalogue of Catalonia.
Cal Compte also tells the story of the village’s built heritage. This large 19th-century manor house contains remains of a private oratory. Torroja Del Priorat originated and grew around a fire tower that controlled the crossing over the Siurana River. The original street layout is cruciform, with circular routes around the village. Local history can also be read in the house names: in the past, there were more than 225 houses with their own names. The names are currently being restored and placed on the façades; they are considered part of the village’s ethnological heritage.
Routes and getting there
The GR-174, also known as the Sender del Priorat, crosses the municipal area. Route 11 runs mostly along forest tracks and offers views of Montsant, the Sierra de la Figuera, Gratallops and Torroja Del Priorat. The two routes therefore offer different points of interest: the GR-174 crosses the municipal area, while Route 11 features the described paths and viewpoints.
From Falset, the road route follows the T-710 to Gratallops and then the T-711 to Torroja Del Priorat.
