Discover the province of Lleida through a wide range of experiences: dry plains with steppe birds, trails in the national park, Romanesque churches and a starry sky that can also be explored through astronomy. Mas de Melons is a particularly vivid example of how closely the landscape and wildlife are connected.

Drylands and Birdwatching

The Mas de Melons nature reserve is a 1,431-hectare dryland area used for agriculture in the Secans of the Lleida plain. It is home to Catalonia’s largest population of sandgrouse, as well as other steppe birds. This gives birdwatching in the province a distinct landscape setting: the focus here is on a named, agricultural dryland landscape. Lleida also offers a wide range of birdwatching and rural tourism opportunities.

Eleven routes have been established in the ZEPA drylands of the Plana de Lleida, and can be travelled by car, bicycle or on foot. Those interested in a nature trail at Estany d'Ivars Vila-sana will find a route there that is about 2.6 kilometres long and suitable for walking and cycling. It passes by observation hides, viewpoints, rest areas, information panels and wooden walkways. Discovery visits can focus on the area in general or specifically on water, landscape and history, or on birds.

Trails Between Plain and Mountains

Hiking and excursions are generally permitted in Aigüestortes y Estany de Sant Maurici National Park, which has an extensive network of trails. Camins Vius offers a different perspective on the area: the route circles the national park via the surrounding villages and restores historic paths through the valleys. This offers two distinct options: an extensive trail network and a route with an explicitly historical connection. In mountain areas, seasonal conditions should be taken into account.

At Planell de Aigüestortes and around Lake Sant Maurici, there are wooden walkways suitable for wheelchair users. Check the seasonal conditions of the facilities before your visit. Coaches from Lleida travel towards Esterri d'Àneu and Vielha, providing access to the national park area. Availability and timetables vary by season; check the timetable before travelling.

Romanesque Churches and Geological History

The Romanesque ensemble of Vall de Boí includes Sant Climent and Santa Maria de Taüll, Sant Joan de Boí, Santa Eulàlia de Erill la Vall, Sant Feliu de Barruera, La Nativitat and Sant Quirc de Durro, as well as Santa Maria de Cardet and La Assumpció de Cóll. All the churches in the ensemble can be visited, with the exception of Sant Quirc de Durro and La Assumpció de Cóll. Check opening arrangements before travelling. At Sant Climent de Taüll, a modern mapping projection recreates the original apse frescoes, linking the Romanesque church interior with a digital representation.

In the Orígens Geopark, the area of Conca de Tremp and Coll de Nargó is considered Europe’s most important site for dinosaur eggs and one of the most significant in the world. The geopark in Lleida has been designated a UNESCO Global Geopark since 2018. The Mont-Rebei Gorge offers another way to explore the landscape: it is one of the most photogenic places, with an impressive path carved into the rock running above the river, while the cliffs rise up to 500 metres above it.

Starry Skies and Astronomy at Montsec

The Montsec Astronomical Park combines an interactive permanent exhibition on astronomy and space science with opportunities to observe the sky. L'Ull del Montsec has a digital planetarium with a 3D full-dome projection system that can depict both the current sky and the sky as it appeared in past eras. The dome and front wall can be opened completely; L'Ull del Montsec also serves as a platform for direct sky observation. The park offers daytime and nighttime nature activities for universities, schools, families and astronomy enthusiasts. The Starlight recognition of the Orígens Geopark also highlights its exceptionally clear starry skies.

A Wine Route Through Several Areas

Those interested in wine and regional production can explore the Lleida Wine Route. It passes through municipalities where wines bearing the DO Costers del Segre designation of origin are produced, stretching from Pallars Sobirà to the fields of Segrià and Les Garrigues. It also passes through Noguera, Urgell and Pla d'Urgell. The route is divided into eight sub-areas. Together with the nature and cultural experiences, this thematic option shows how many different interests can be taken into account when looking for accommodation in Lleida.
