Enviny is a mountain village situated at an altitude of 1,134 m above the Barranc de Montardit. Its church, a Gothic altarpiece and the history of the former schoolhouse give the village a distinctive cultural and historical character. Nearby are also the ruins of Sant Roc, reached via a 1 km-long path.

Church, necropolis and Gothic altarpiece

The parish church of Mare de Déu de la Purificació is also known as Candelera. Its tower is distinguished by an octagonal upper storey and a pyramidal roof. In front of the church is a necropolis with five tombs dating from the 9th and 10th centuries. Together, the church and tombs form a notable cultural and historical focal point in the village.

The Gothic altarpiece is associated with Enviny; Pere Espallargues created it in 1490. The original was sold around 1909 and is now divided between the Hispanic Society of America in New York and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. This should be distinguished from a complete reproduction, which was unveiled in 2009 using the Catalan Papelgel technique.

The Estudis and local history

Enviny’s former school building, the Estudis, served as the setting for Jaume Cabré’s novel and the miniseries Les Veus del Pamano. A photograph of pupils taken in front of the schoolhouse is also connected with the novel: it became its cover image. For visitors interested in literature and its settings, this connection brings local history together with a specific work. The former manor house, Casa Aytés, is also among Enviny’s notable architectural buildings.

Sant Roc and the paths in Batlliu de Sort

The ruins of Sant Roc are close to Enviny. The 1 km-long path there retains its old paving in some sections. At an altitude of 1,304 m stand the remains of a single-nave church with a semicircular apse; no roof remains. From Sant Roc, the view faces east towards Torreta del Orri and the valley of Montardit.

On the route through Batlliu de Sort, the path to Sant Roc branches off at 2:25 hours; the ruins follow a few minutes later. In Enviny, the route also passes the ruins of the chapel of Santa Llúcia. If you plan to walk the section from Enviny to Bressui, note its description: the path descends along a heavily paved trail damaged by time. As surface conditions can change due to weather, maintenance and use, it is advisable to check the trail conditions before setting out.
