El castell in Puigverd d'Agramunt has been documented since 1061. The town also has an early Romanesque chapel, Roman mosaics and the Ruta del Sió: it brings together architectural history, archaeology and a river landscape. Those choosing a destination based on such a range of interests will find several specific starting points for planning their trip.

Castle and churches: different periods of construction

El castell stands in the upper part of Puigverd d'Agramunt, beside the church. The castle was designated a Bé Cultural d'Interès Nacional (BCIN) in 1985. The two dates have different significance: 1061 marks its first documented mention, while 1985 is the year it was designated a cultural asset of national interest.

The parish church, l'Església parroquial de Sant Pere, is a large neoclassical building. It was built around the 18th century over an older Romanesque church. A rose window lights the interior, while the façade stands out for its curved lines. Its construction date, the earlier church and its present architectural features offer several ways to trace the town's architectural history.

L'Ermita de Sant Miquel represents another period: the chapel is early Romanesque, and its construction is dated approximately to the 11th or 12th century. Its interior has a single nave. Compared with Sant Pere, it represents a distinctly different architectural form and period from the large neoclassical church.

Roman mosaics and a festival

At La vil·la romana dels reguers, remains of polychrome mosaics dating from the 4th century were discovered in 1961 during agricultural work. There are three mosaics from different rooms. Their decorations include geometric and floral patterns, as well as figurative animal motifs. The dates provide different information: 1961 is the year of discovery, while the 4th century is the period to which the mosaics date. Their varied motifs offer a glimpse of the range of designs that have survived.

Another specific date to note on the calendar is the Festa Major gran, also known as the Festa Major de Sant Mateu. This traditional festival in Puigverd d'Agramunt is celebrated on 3 September. If you would like to take a cultural event into account when choosing your travel dates, you can include this festival in your plans.

The Ruta del Sió and the river landscape

Stage TRAM 5 of the Ruta del Sió runs from Agramunt to Puigverd d'Agramunt and ends at Parc del Riu Sió. TRAM 5 also identifies the old town as a point of interest on the route: the route runs along Carrer Abadia to Plaça Mestre Navall. The Ruta del Sió also has an access point in Puigverd d'Agramunt at the picnic area of Parc del Riu Sió.

The river landscape offers another distinct theme. The area around Peixera de Puigverd is part of a riverside landscape. Downstream, on Pla dels Horts de la Mata, bioengineering measures were carried out to support the regeneration of the riverside woodland and improve river drainage. The area is therefore of interest both for its riverside landscape and for the measures aimed at its regeneration and the river's flow.

Near the Sió River is Molí del Senyor, also known as Molí del Siscà. The mill is designated a Bé Cultural d'Interès Local, or local cultural asset of interest. Along with the castle, churches, mosaics and routes, it adds to the range of subjects to explore during a stay. When looking for a hotel in Puigverd d'Agramunt, you can consider whether to focus on architectural history, archaeological finds, the festival or the river landscape.
