Aravell lies at an altitude of 738 m on a gently undulating, cultivated plain on the right bank of the River d’Aravell. Alongside this landscape, a hiking route that starts and ends in the village and the history of the parish church of Sant Esteve are key considerations when planning a trip.

Hiking the Vuelta a la Sierra del Morral

The Vuelta a la Sierra del Morral is a natural trail near Aravell. It starts and ends in the upper part of the village. Narrow paths, gentle climbs and downhill trails define its character. The route crosses the River d’Aravell several times via footbridges. Trail conditions may vary by season; check the condition of the footbridges locally. When planning, it is worth factoring in both the ascents and descents and the repeated river crossings.

Sant Esteve: Architecture and History

Aravell is documented for the years 1010 to 1012; in 1015, the church of Sant Esteve in the village is mentioned. These dates mark different points of reference: the first concerns the village, the second the church. In 1114, the sacramental will of Viscount Ramon de Castellbò was sworn on the altar of Sant Esteve d’Aravell. The church’s history is thus linked to a specific event and a named historical figure.

The parish church of Sant Esteve is a church dependent on Bellestar. It has a rectangular floor plan and a square tower. Sant Esteve d’Aravell is designated a cultural asset of local interest and is considered representative of the architectural style practised in the comarca in the 17th and 18th centuries. This stylistic classification concerns a different period from the 1114 event at the altar: Sant Esteve therefore illustrates both a historically dated event and a later architectural classification.

Mountain Biking and Golf

Another activity is the Aravell–Bellestar circular mountain biking route, which passes through Aravell. This offers a choice of different ways to get around: on foot along a natural trail with narrow paths, climbs, descents and footbridge crossings, or by mountain bike on a circular route.

The Aravell golf course was designed by Txema Olazábal and opened in 1998. UGOLF Aravell’s current programme page lists an introductory golf session for 60 euros; it was checked in 2026. If you plan to book such a session, check the price before making arrangements.
