Vallferosa brings together an architectural ensemble, a former village and a hilly setting. The ensemble includes the Torre de Vallferosa, the village and the Church of Sant Pere. A visit combines the tower’s history, traces of earlier settlement and an agroforestry landscape. The histories of the tower and the church are distinct chapters.
The Tower, Church and Village History
The Torre de Vallferosa is 33 metres high and has a diameter of 13 metres. Its height is therefore more than twice its diameter. Radiocarbon dating commissioned by the Generalitat dates the tower to the 8th century. Its dimensions and dating give the building a clear place in the focus of a visit: architecture and the long history of the area take centre stage.
Another historical milestone is the former parish church of Sant Pere de Vallferosa. It was founded in 1698 by the Jesuits of Betlem in Barcelona; its exact location has not been established with certainty. The former village of Vallferosa lies in ruins and was inhabited until around 1939. A washhouse and a water well have been preserved in the village. Together with the church and the tower, these details are among the traces that reveal the place’s history beyond its buildings.
Hilly Landscape and Route
The area around Vallferosa lies at an altitude of between 600 and 900 metres. The terrain is hilly and forms an agroforestry mosaic landscape. The term describes the coexistence of agriculture and wooded areas; it broadens the focus on buildings to include the landscape. If you are interested in architecture and local history, you can connect these themes with the surroundings rather than viewing Vallferosa through a single building alone.
The Vallferosa Route can be completed on foot in half a day. This is a useful timeframe when planning your visit in separate stages. There is space to park your vehicle without difficulty at both points where the route crosses the LV-3005 road. A notice dated 7 June 2024 also mentions a 70-minute guided tour of the Torre de Vallferosa, the Church of Sant Pere and the remains of the former village. This time refers to the guided tour, not the duration of the route. Check the current schedule before your visit if you would like to include the tour in your plans.
A Visit in April
Every year in April, residents celebrate the Festa de Sant Marc i Santes Creus at Sant Pere de Vallferosa. Dates and arrangements may change. So if you would like to plan your trip around the celebration, check the latest information in advance. The festival provides a recurring seasonal reason to visit; the tower, church, former village and landscape remain other themes to shape your time in Vallferosa around.
