Riu de Cerdanya brings together specific destinations for a trip combining nature and local history: in Cadí-Moixeró Natural Park, a nature trail leads to two monumental fir trees, while the church, washhouse and Festa Major offer insights into the town’s cultural heritage. When planning, it is worth distinguishing this themed trail from the long-distance Cavalls del Vent route and checking the annual festival dates separately.

Nature trails among fir trees and long-distance hiking

The Ruta de l'Avetosa de Riu is a nature trail that runs through a fir forest and leads to two monumental fir trees. The trees have a circumference of more than four metres and are up to 30 metres tall. The trail begins at the Refugi del Serrat de les Esposes; its route links the fir forest with a clearly identified natural landmark.

For directions from the starting point: from Riu, a five-kilometre track runs towards Coll del PendĂs to the access point in the area of the Refugi del Serrat de les Esposes. Track conditions can change, so check them before setting out.

Cavalls del Vent is on a different scale. The long-distance route passes through the mountainous area of the municipality of Riu de Cerdanya and is designed as a crossing between eight staffed mountain refuges in CadĂ-MoixerĂł Natural Park. It is signposted with orange markings and extends for about 97 kilometres. It is therefore a large-scale hike, while the Ruta de l'Avetosa de Riu focuses on a fir forest and two individual trees. Numerous hiking routes and trails are also accessible from Riu.

Riu de Cerdanya lies in Cadí-Moixeró Natural Park, at the foot of Cadí and Moixeró. This setting provides the landscape backdrop for the different hiking options: the nature trail passes through the fir forest, while Cavalls del Vent incorporates the municipality’s mountainous area into a longer crossing.

Churches, architecture and local history

The central voussoir of the portal of Sant Joan Baptista bears the date 1773. Sant Joan de Riu de PendĂs is an 18th-century church; its rounded apse preserves Romanesque forms. The Baroque altar of Sant Joan de Riu de PendĂs also has a distinctive historical significance: it is one of two altars in Baixa Cerdanya that survived the destruction of 1936.

Another local structure is the Font de les Rentadores, a 19th-century washhouse. The fountain has five outlets decorated with carved heads. The details of the portal, apse and fountain offer different starting points for exploring the area’s architectural history and traditional way of life.

Festa Major and Sant Joan traditions

The Ball de les Rentadores is traditionally part of the Festa Major of Riu de Cerdanya. The dance is performed at the fountain in the village square; it was revived by a group of young people from Riu towards the end of the 20th century. This tradition thus brings both the festive setting and its more recent history into focus.

The festivities around Midsummer’s Eve include a bonfire and a shared meal featuring coca and cava. On the morning of 24 June, a mass in honour of Sant Joan Baptista, the patron saint of Riu, is part of the Festa Major. Annual programme details may vary, so check the dates and programme for your travel year before your trip.

The Sant Joan celebrations also include the Pujada a la Font: a walk from the church to the village fountain, followed by a snack of chocolate, biscuits, anise and Muscat wine. This combination of a walk and a shared refreshment adds another specific activity to the dance and festival traditions. The details may vary from year to year.
