A self-guided walk through the oldest part of Os de Civís is classified as very easy. It highlights the village’s history; marked hiking and mountain biking trails add a focus on nature and outdoor activities to your visit. This lets you divide your time between the historic village centre and the trails in Parc Natural de l'Alt Pirineu.
Village History and Architectural Features
Os de Civís was once a walled village built on a rocky outcrop. This layout helped preserve its buildings. The walk also points out the former medieval moat. The rocky outcrop and enclosed layout provide an architectural framework for the historic village, while the moat recalls its former fortifications.
The church of Sant Pere d'Os de Civís is Romanesque and was altered at a later date. A Gothic fresco from the church can be seen at the Museu Diocesà de la Seu d'Urgell. This brings together two distinct periods: the later alteration to the church building and a Gothic work originating from Sant Pere.
Local traditions are also part of the village’s character. Carlina (Carlina acaulis or Carlina acanthifolia) is placed on the doorsteps of houses to protect against witches and evil spirits, according to local tradition. The visitor reception centre in the former village schools includes an exhibition about border areas. The schools’ conversion and the exhibition’s subject thus connect the buildings’ former use with another cultural focus.
The Bordes de Conflent are part of the centre of Os de Civís and form one of the few groups of bordes with a chapel. Nearby, they lie at the foot of the 2,789-metre-high Pic de Salòria, the highest point in Alt Urgell. The bordes thus connect a distinctive group of buildings with a clearly identified geographic landmark.
Plan Your Trails and Journey
Since 2003, the entire area of Os de Civís has been part of Parc Natural de l'Alt Pirineu. Marked hiking and mountain biking trails have been established in Os de Civís in connection with the nature park. When planning your stay, you can treat the historic village walk and these activities as distinct highlights.
One specific hiking destination is the route to Collada de Conflent, near Os de Civís. The circular route is less than ten kilometres long and lies entirely within Parc Natural de l'Alt Pirineu. Part of it follows a trail signposted by the park. The total effective walking time is three hours, excluding breaks. This gives you both a distance and a time estimate for planning; conditions and stops may affect the actual time needed. Signage can also change, so check the current route information before setting out.
A forest track leads to the Bordes de Conflent; conditions on the track may vary. The paved road to Os de Civís can only be reached from Andorran territory. Take this access arrangement into account when planning your journey and check current road conditions before travelling.
