Irgo: Architecture, Views and Enduro
In Irgo, two sacred buildings, a viewpoint and two enduro routes offer different points of interest. On the edge of the village stands Mare de Déu de les Neus d’Irgo, at an elevation of 1,380 metres. Ermita de Sant Salvador d’Irgo is located 500 metres before reaching the village. The architecture of the two buildings can be compared, although they differ in their structural features. The Mirador viewpoint and the routes offer different experiences: sweeping views on the one hand and specific enduro trails on the other.
Two Buildings, Different Features
Mare de Déu de les Neus d’Irgo has a single nave covered by a barrel vault. Its porch protects a round-arched portal; the building follows the Lombard tradition. A single-nave church has one main nave and no side aisles. A barrel vault is a curved ceiling that runs lengthwise. These terms describe different aspects of the building: its spatial layout, ceiling and entrance design. Together with the Lombard tradition, these features give a more precise picture of the architecture than simply classifying it as a church.
Ermita de Sant Salvador d’Irgo also has a single nave covered by a barrel vault, but it has been extensively altered. The nave was later extended to the east, and a portal was opened in the new façade. The two buildings therefore share the basic features of a single-nave layout and a barrel vault. In the case of the Ermita, a structural alteration adds a historical dimension to the comparison. Its classification as a rustic building from the 12th century is a hypothesis. When comparing the buildings’ history, you can distinguish the building’s original form from the later alteration on its eastern side.
The Mirador and the Route
Mirador de Sant Salvador d’Irgo is on elevated ground above the village centre. From there, sweeping views extend across the valley and the Pyrenees. You can reach the vicinity of the viewpoint by vehicle or via a short walk. The les 2 Nogueres route also leads to Ermita de Sant Salvador d’Irgo: from the road to Iran and Irgo, it continues through Irgo to the Ermita. On the route, the Ermita is a viewpoint over both valleys. The Mirador above the village centre and the Ermita along the route therefore offer different vantage points from which to look out over the landscape.
Two Enduro Routes from Irgo
RUTA 8. ENDURO IRGO - LLESP is an enduro descent from Irgo to Llesp. RUTA 9. ENDURO TUAREG is an enduro route starting in Irgo. The first route specifies a descent and destination, while the second specifies its starting point. This comparison makes the different route details easy to understand: one is a descent to Llesp, while the other starts in Irgo. You can distinguish the routes by their stated direction and starting point, without combining them into a single trail.
