Castellnou de Seana combines a settlement history documented as far back as the 12th century with an agricultural landscape and several specifically named routes. Different focuses are possible for a stay: historical buildings and memorial sites, or a stage with a stated distance. For the routes, it is important to distinguish the length of a whole stage from the distance to the town.
History and architectural heritage
The origins of the settlement are documented in a Carta de Poblament (settlement charter) from the 12th century. On 25 May 1179, this charter was granted to 47 settlers; it covered the castle and the territory of Castellnou. The date and scope of the Carta give the town’s history a specific chronological reference and link the settlement to the territory of that time.
Sant Joan Baptista is an 18th-century religious building in the Baroque style. A new three-nave church was built on the site of the former church. A plaque at Sant Joan Baptista also commemorates Pere Carrera i Torrent, a son of Castellnou by birth and the last abbot of Santes Creus. Thus, architectural history and a specific biography are connected to the same place.
Another historical trace leads to the Cafè Modern, built in 1932 as the headquarters of the Joventut Republicana. The del Gomà wayside cross is also part of local tradition: its base is preserved on the south side of Plaça de l’Església. The way it is presented on site may change.
Landscape and local culture
Fields of grain, forage crops and fruit, irrigated by the Canal d’Urgell, shape the rural landscape of the municipal area. The Riu Corb runs from east to west through the southern part of the area. This makes it possible to understand the landscape both through its agricultural use and by reference to a clearly named river.
Local festivals and a sweet treat are also among the features described. The Festes Majors of Castellnou de Seana fill the streets with music and communal celebration. Orelleta is described as the town’s emblematic sweet. The annual Cursa i caminada de l’Orelleta is dedicated to it. Event dates vary; if you are travelling specifically for it, check the date of the event in question.
Routes and different distances
The Camà de Sant Jaume covers 21.9 kilometres on the Vallbona de les Monges–Castellnou de Seana stage. The entire stage can be cycled. This figure refers to the length of the section to Castellnou, not just the distance from an intermediate point.
For the Camino Ignaciano, a different reference point is given: on the section between El Palau d’Anglesola and Verdú, you reach Castellnou after 7.84 kilometres, at Plaça Major; the route then continues along Carrer del Calvari. A description published in 2022 says this section is signposted and can be travelled by gravel bike or off-road vehicle. Before setting out, check the current signage and route conditions.
Another route from Vila-sana to Ivars d’Urgell reaches Castellnou after 3.36 kilometres. The figures answer different planning questions: 21.9 kilometres is the length of the entire cycle stage of the Camà de Sant Jaume; 7.84 and 3.36 kilometres each indicate when Castellnou is reached on the named routes.
Getting there and finding your way around
The railway station serving Castellnou de Seana is about 700 metres from the town centre. Check the latest information about the station before travelling. The N-II, the A-2 and the Barcelona–Lleida railway line cross the southern part of the municipal area. These corridors and the distance to the station refer to different geographical points: the roads and railway line run through the south of the municipal area, while the distance to the station is measured from the town centre.
When choosing accommodation, it helps to decide what brings you on your trip: would you like to set aside time for the town’s history, or focus on one of the named routes? If you are travelling in stages, it is worth considering the starting point and the type of distance given together, and checking current route conditions in advance.
