Navès brings together a striking rocky landscape, Romanesque architectural history and a circular route through Vall d’Ora. To help plan your visit, start by deciding what interests you most: the views of Serra de Busa, Sant Pere de Graudescales, or the route to Pla de Busa. The landscape, the building and the trail offer distinct ways to explore the municipality.
Rocky landscape and protected area
Serra de Busa is located in the municipality of Navès. Its cliffs have formations reminiscent of Montserrat. Its highest point is the summit of Cogul, at around 1,526 metres above sea level. Together with Capolatell, Serra de Busa forms part of the protected natural area of Serres de Busa, els Bastets i Lord (PEIN). Its striking rock formations and its protected-area status are two distinct aspects of this landscape.
Romanesque architectural history in Vall d’Ora
The church of the former monastery of Sant Pere de Graudescales is located in Vall d’Ora, in the municipality of Navès, at the foot of the cliffs of Serra de Busa and beside the Aigua d’Ora river. Dating from the 12th century, it is the only surviving building of a former Benedictine monastery. Its significance is reflected both in its date and in its role as the surviving building of the former monastery.
The church has a single-nave layout and a Latin-cross floor plan. A single-nave layout means the building has one longitudinal nave; a Latin-cross floor plan describes the cross-shaped layout. These features offer specific points of reference if you want to explore Romanesque architecture not only by period, but also by looking at the structure of the building.
The Ecomuseu de la Vall d’Ora offers another historical perspective: it showcases activities carried out in the valley up to the mid-20th century. At the Molí de Ca l’Ambròs, the focus is on its technical equipment and processing. The mill has two millstones and can produce wheat and barley flour. The church, ecomuseum and mill therefore offer distinct ways to explore the area: through monastic history, former activities in the valley and the functions of a mill.
Circular route and trail conditions
The route through Vall d’Ora to Pla de Busa and Sant Pere de Graudescales is a circular trail. It begins and ends at the car park of the Ecomuseu de la Vall d’Ora. This means both the destinations and the start and end point of the loop are clear; when planning, you can treat it as a continuous route rather than visiting each place on a separate outing.
The route passes through l’Escala, a narrow, rocky gully around 50 metres long. It includes a 10-metre iron ladder followed by wooden steps. Take these technical features into account when deciding whether to do the route; suitable preparation is required. l’Escala is therefore an important planning consideration for the circular route, not just another place name along the way.
If architectural history is your main interest, Sant Pere de Graudescales offers specific architectural features and a connection to the former monastery. For those more interested in activities in the valley, the Ecomuseu offers a different perspective. The circular route connects these destinations along a clearly described trail and includes the technical passage at l’Escala. This lets you choose what to focus on during your stay in Navès without treating its different attractions as interchangeable.
