Arfa offers a range of trail profiles to help you plan your trip, as well as a local history shaped by its buildings and former economic importance. The Camí de la Freita starts in the village and runs through forest throughout; the Camino Natural de Les Mines has a 2.4-kilometre, mostly flat branch. Other highlights include the historic Pou de Gel d'Arfa, the bell tower of Sant Serni and Arfa’s cherries. These themes give you different ways to shape your stay around the landscape, architecture or history.

Forest Trails with Different Profiles

The Camí de la Freita starts in Arfa and leads to the Creu de la Freita. The trail runs entirely through forest. From the higher sections, you can enjoy views across the Segre River valley and towards the mountains of Andorra and Pallars. For choosing a trail based on the landscape, two details are particularly useful: forest characterises the entire route, while the views are found in the higher sections.

The branch of the Camino Natural de Les Mines is 2.4 kilometres long and leads to the Ramal del Funicular and the Arfa River. It is mostly flat and pleasant to walk. Compared with the Camí de la Freita, this route is defined by its length, profile and two named destinations; the Freita route, by contrast, is characterised by its continuous forest and views. You can therefore weigh up the options according to specific features: would you prefer a flat route with named destinations, or one focused on forest and elevated views?

The Camino Natural de Les Mines near Arfa also has facilities for competitive whitewater canoe slalom events. So, alongside walking, whitewater sports are another specific local attraction for travellers interested in this sport.

History in the Townscape and Cherry Tradition

The Pou de Gel d'Arfa dates from 1641. It was built to supply ice to the canons of La Seu d’Urgell. Ice froze naturally in the ice house’s basins and was stored there for more than a century. Its construction date, purpose and storage function make this a specific chapter in local history: they tell the story both of the building’s function and of how the ice was obtained and preserved.

The church of Sant Serni is another historic landmark. Its distinctive octagonal bell tower was built in 1707 and has a defining impact on Arfa’s townscape. The two buildings convey different aspects of the past: the tower stands out for its architectural form and effect on the townscape, while the Pou de Gel reflects its former role in supplying ice.

Arfa’s cherries are also part of the town’s history. They were historically well known and provided an important source of income for residents over many years. This economic aspect adds an agricultural dimension to the local past alongside the history of its buildings. Arfa is also part of the Xarxa de pobles amb encant network of the Diputació de Lleida.
