When planning a trip to Iran, culture, nature and various routes are all worth considering. Sant Climent d’Iran offers a tangible connection to the history of architecture; the Salencar de Llesp can be reached on foot from Iran. For the les 2 Nogueres route, it is worth considering the physical demands and technical difficulty separately.
Sant Climent d’Iran: architectural form and history
Sant Climent d’Iran is a single-nave church. The nave is spanned by a barrel vault, and the apse is semicircular. Based on its oldest structural elements, the church can tentatively be dated to the 12th century. In 1992, it was declared a “Bé Cultural d’Interès Nacional.” The two dates relate to different aspects: the 12th century refers to the oldest parts of the building, while 1992 marks its designation as a protected site. Together, the architectural form and historical context offer a tangible point of interest for anyone interested in the village’s architecture.
Sant Marc and the calendar date
Iran is one of the villages that take part in the traditional Sant Marc gathering at the Sant Salvador d’Irgo hermitage. It takes place in the morning on the Sunday closest to April 25. The date is therefore tied to a moveable Sunday rather than a fixed calendar date. If you plan to attend the gathering, check the current program before travelling.
Salencar de Llesp: mountain wetland and nature
The Salencar de Llesp is a mountain wetland of about 30 hectares in the Natura 2000 network. It offers a different focus from the church: here, the landscape is the main attraction, rather than a single building. The area can be reached on foot from Iran. If you plan to hike there, take the current condition of the trails into account.
Routes with different levels of difficulty
The les 2 Nogueres route crosses the Barrabes Valley and the Boí Valley. After passing through Llesp, it continues to the road that climbs to Iran. The route is considered physically demanding but technically easy—with one brief exception: on a section of the Camí de l’Aigua, you have to get off your bike. Both details matter when choosing a route: technical simplicity does not mean that little physical effort is required. If you plan to cycle the route, also allow for the short section where you have to dismount. Iran is also one of the villages listed on the Pedals de Foc mountain bike route.
Getting to Iran
The turn-off for Iran leaves the N-230 near El Pont de Suert. From Gotarta, the road runs along the Serra de Sant Martí and passes through Igüerri and Irgo de Tor before reaching Iran. The distinction is useful when planning your route: the N-230 marks the turn-off, while Gotarta, Igüerri and Irgo de Tor indicate the route that follows. Check current road and access conditions before travelling, as they may change.
