Almenar’s local themes revolve around work, water and landscape: the Museu Casa Tonot preserves architectural details and tools from the world of agricultural work, while the Molí fariner showcases the historic use of water. The natural landscape ranges from the river ecosystem of the Camí del Riu to the Clot de la Unilla, whose seasonal conditions depend on rainfall.
Local history in buildings
The Museu Casa Tonot is located in a single-level room in Almenar’s old town, on Carrer Major. Preserved vaults, stone pillars, stone feeding troughs and stone basins define the historic building fabric. The collection also includes tools from the world of agricultural work. This juxtaposition of space and equipment offers two distinct ways of exploring local history.
El Pouet de Gel is an ice house built into a hill near the de la Munya bridge on the irrigation canal. It is 8.25 metres high, and its base diameter is 6.85 metres. Its height exceeds its base diameter by 1.40 metres—a comparison that makes the scale of the building easy to grasp.
The Molí fariner focuses on the use of water. The first specific information about the Molí fariner dates back to 1328, when a royal privilege was granted to build a grain mill. The mill had three millstones and a regulated water system. After being used as an energy source, the water flowed back into the irrigation canal through four arches. The mill mechanism and water return make the milling process understandable as a technical sequence.
River route and seasonal lagoon
The Camí del Riu in Almenar provides access to the river ecosystem and the Horta, a cultivated landscape created through irrigation. The route has very few inclines, is in good condition and is described as pleasant and easy to walk. Its focus therefore encompasses both the riverside and the irrigated landscape.
The Clot de la Unilla lies between Alguaire and Almenar. It is an endorheic lagoon of considerable size, possibly the best-preserved one in Catalonia. It becomes a temporary seasonal lagoon only in years with abundant rainfall; over the past 40 years, this has happened roughly once every three years. When planning your trip, therefore, do not assume that a lagoon will necessarily be present during your visit.
Events and when to visit
The Mercat Medieval takes place on the second weekend of June and includes demonstrations of medieval crafts. Check the exact event dates before your trip. At the Fira Tast, an exhibition and tastings of dishes prepared by Almenar residents take place on Sunday at midday. Each edition features a local product.
The market and the lagoon offer different considerations when choosing your travel dates: the Mercat Medieval has a specified time frame in June, while the seasonal lagoon depends on rainy years. Check the exact event dates, and do not count on finding a lagoon at the Clot de la Unilla.
