Castell de Guà rdia de Mur is documented as far back as 1012. A tower with a triangular floor plan and a wall enclosing the northern area have been preserved. A triangular floor plan describes the shape of the tower; the wall is defined by its position in the northern area. The church of Sant Feliu stands beside the castle. A visit to Castell de Mur can be combined with the Col·legiata de Santa Maria de Mur.
Castles, Churches and Local History
The heritage route through GuĂ rdia de Noguera passes along streets laid out in a concentric pattern. This means the streets are arranged in rings around a central point; the focus is therefore also on the layout of the settlement, not just on individual buildings. Casa Roca on Carrer Major in GuĂ rdia de Noguera is a Renaissance-style building. Together, these features illustrate a useful shift in scale: from the street layout to the architectural style of a single house.
Santa Maria de Guà rdia de Noguera is the original Romanesque parish church of the village of Guà rdia de Tremp. It was built of stone in the 12th century and has a bell tower. Nearby, Santa Maria de Mur has displayed a faithful copy of its murals since 2008. Here, two different time frames come together: the church’s construction in the 12th century and the copy on display since 2008.
Routes Through the Cultural Landscape
The route from GuĂ rdia to Castell de GuĂ rdia and Castell de Mur features a marked change in terrain. It begins on a level path, crosses a road and climbs gently along a track. Soon, the route becomes a damp trail bordered by dense vegetation and ivy. It then leaves the cultural landscape, enters a gorge, crosses it and climbs in a zigzag over a less densely wooded slope. The sequence of track, damp trail, gorge and slope makes this route especially appealing to travellers who want to experience varied landscapes along the way.
The Verneda de Palau nature route offers a different sequence of landscape features. It follows a track suitable for four-wheel-drive vehicles through cultivated fields and olive and almond groves. Further on, a path branches off to the Ermita de Sant SebastiĂ ; the descending track then crosses two gorges. The main differences when choosing between the routes are their surroundings and terrain: a damp trail and zigzag climb on the route from GuĂ rdia, and cultivated fields, groves and a turn-off on the Verneda de Palau route.
