Boldú can be explored through a range of themes: its location in the flat comarca of Urgell, the architectural heritage of the Església de l’Assumpció and the Creu de terme, and the Festa Major del Roser. A route in the surrounding area complements these local and festive themes with the Sèquia de Boldú, vineyards, and fields of grain and fruit. This gives you a variety of starting points for planning, from local history to landscape.

Location and orientation

Boldú lies at an altitude of 266 m in the flat area of the comarca of Urgell, south of the Serra d'Almenara and almost merged with la Fuliola. Its flat setting and its position south of the Serra provide two geographical reference points: one describes the character of the area, while the other locates the village within this landscape.

The municipal Els Plans d'Almenara PR-C72 route reaches Boldú at kilometre 24.450. In the village, it follows carrer de Balmes and carrer Major to plaça d’Engràcia Macià. The kilometre marker and the sequence of two streets and the square provide a specific reference for the route. Route conditions may change. Check them before planning your route.

Church and wayside cross

The Església de l’Assumpció can be understood both through early references to its history and through a surviving architectural detail. The first documentary references to the church of Boldú date from the 13th century. The old portal jamb stones are still set into the wall of the former façade. The church’s early mention and a specific feature of its former façade thus offer distinct perspectives.

At the entrance to the village, in the middle of the main square, stands the Creu de terme de Boldú. The Calvary cross dates from the 17th century; at its base is a skull symbol. While the church is notable for its early references and portal stones, the Creu de terme offers its own points of interest in its date, type of cross and sculptural detail. You can therefore consider the two cultural landmarks through different features, rather than treating them simply as a single list of attractions.

Festive traditions and landscape

The Festa Major del Roser includes the traditional Plantada del Xop, as well as a sung mass and a communal vermouth in honour of the patron saint. The festival thus combines a traditional custom with religious and communal elements. Individual programme details may vary from one edition to another. If you would like to plan your trip around a particular part of the festival, check the programme for that edition.

In the area around Boldú, a route runs along the Sèquia de Boldú after leaving Castell del Remei. It passes vineyards as well as fields of grain and fruit. This offers a different connection to the landscape from the village route: the PR-C72 reaches Boldú and follows named streets to the square, while the route along the Sèquia describes the fields and watercourse in the surrounding area. If your focus is local history and festive traditions, the church, cross and Festa Major are the relevant themes. For a view of the surrounding farmland, the route along the Sèquia is another starting point. Route conditions may also change here; check them before planning.
