Tàrrega combines medieval history with museums, Modernista architecture and outdoor activities in the municipality. Choosing a clear focus can help you plan your stay: would you mainly like to explore historical collections and buildings, or are nature trails also part of your plans? The city’s history dates back to the 11th century, when Tàrrega emerged as a medieval town and Vegueria around the castle in the valley of the Ondara River.
City history at the Museu Comarcal
The Museu Comarcal de l’Urgell is housed in the former residence of the Perelló family, a city palace dating from the late 17th century. Its permanent exhibitions cover Iberian prehistory, medieval Tàrrega, the stately rooms of Cal Perelló, and the city’s art history from 1875 to 1965. The museum thus brings together several historical periods and themes: from prehistory and the Middle Ages to the art history of the more recent city.
One specific way to explore the exhibition “Tragèdia al Call. Tàrrega 1348” and the Jewish quarter is to join a guided tour run by the Museu Comarcal. It takes place on the first Sunday of every month at 10:30 a.m. and visits both the exhibition and the city’s Jewish quarter. The exhibition presents and contextualizes archaeological materials from excavations at the Les Roquetes Jewish necropolis, as well as deposits in the Jewish quarter that resulted from the attack. Check the current schedule before your trip.
Modernisme and architecture
The Ruta del modernisme takes you through Tàrrega to the city’s most significant Modernista buildings, constructed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The Antiga Farinera Balcells in Tàrrega is an example of Modernista industrial architecture. Casa Sobies was built between 1909 and 1910 and is considered an example of Arts and Crafts architecture.
The frescoes inside the church of Santa Maria de l’Alba offer another artistic highlight. They were created by Jaume Minguell Miret and Josep Minguell Cardeñes. Together with the Modernista buildings, they offer a glimpse of the different forms of art and architecture in Tàrrega.
Industrial history and performances
The J. Trepat factory complex has been preserved. The first agricultural machines for threshing, mowing and binding were designed, manufactured and sold there. Unlike the museums and architectural sites, the focus here is on the development and production of machinery for farm work: design, production and sales all form part of this industrial history.
Mas de Colom – Casa Borges is an immersive, educational visitor centre in a former farmhouse in Tàrrega. FiraTàrrega presents performances at more than twenty venues spread throughout the city, both indoors and outdoors. While the factory and architectural history can be traced to individual buildings, FiraTàrrega encompasses a wide range of venues across the city.
Park and nature trails
Parc de Sant Eloi covers 17 hectares and has a wide variety of trees and shrubs, with around 70 species. The nature trails in the municipality of Tàrrega are suitable for hiking and mountain biking (BTT); the routes are not very difficult and are accessible to everyone. There are two distinct ways to enjoy nature: a park known for its size and plant diversity, and trails for hiking or mountain biking.
When looking for hotels in Tàrrega, it helps to decide in advance whether city history, architecture, industrial history or nature trails will be the main focus of your stay.
