Where the Cinca flows through La Granja d'Escarp and joins the Segre, the Aiguabarreig Segre-Cinca natural area begins. From there, it follows the Segre to its course near Seròs. The river landscape is the village’s defining feature; paths, wildlife and historical remains offer further ways to explore the surroundings.

River Landscape and Birdlife

At the Aiguabarreig, green riverbanks meet dry, rugged countryside. The natural area is also a biological corridor where species from very different habitats come together. Many migratory bird species breed, overwinter or stop here to rest. The river sections and the Aiguabarreig areas associated with the EIN have been protected since 1992 and cover 760.96 hectares, most of which lie within the municipality of La Granja d'Escarp.

This combination of riverside landscape and dry countryside shapes the natural area, as does its importance for birds. Those interested in the landscape will find not only a river confluence, but also a transition between different habitats.

Paths and Explorations

The CamĂ Natural de l'Aiguabarreig Segre-Cinca runs along the left bank of the Segre within the municipal area. The municipality also offers mountain biking and hiking routes from the village, at 78 metres, to Punta de Montmaneu, at 495 metres. Along the way, you can visit remains from the Spanish Civil War and several disused lignite mines.

Another pathway is the Passera de fusta, which continues the Camí Natural del Riu Segre through the Sant Jaume riverside woodland. For families, Els Enigmes d’en Pius is a permanently installed orienteering game on the Aiguabarreig nature trail. An orienteering map, marked checkpoints and small clues make it possible to explore independently in an educational and playful way. Here, finding your way becomes part of the nature experience.

Route 3 – El poble i l'Ermita de Sant Jaume – also links a starting point in the village with a specific destination: it begins in the centre and leads to the Ermita de Sant Jaume, set on a hill, with views over the confluence of the Segre and Ebre. The chapel dates from the 17th century and stands on the left bank of the Cinca, about one kilometre upstream from where the Cinca joins the Segre.

Cultural Heritage and Local History

From the Creu del Calvari sculpture ensemble, you can see the course and confluence of the Segre and Cinca, neighbouring villages and a broad stretch of the riverside gardens. The Abric del barranc de Sant Jaume is part of the Rock Paintings of La Granja d’Escarp World Heritage site. The Jaciment de la Serra del Calvari is a settlement area of about one hectare, with an orthogonal layout and paved streets. It lies on an almost semicircular promontory near the confluences of the Segre with both the Cinca and the Ebre.

The parish church of Sant Jaume is an 18th-century Neoclassical building. An octagonal bell tower rises above the village. La Granja d'Escarp’s industrial history includes the complex of buildings belonging to the cement factory, which opened in 1879. It comprised lignite and limestone mines, kilns, a landing place on the banks of the Segre and an animal-powered railway.

Festivals and Events

The Sant Jaume festival on 25 July includes a procession with the saint and a solemn Mass. Les Àguedes, the traditional festival of married women, takes place on 5 February. After Mass, blessed Coca pastries are handed out; the celebrations also include a procession in honour of Saint Àgueda and a dance.

Past events also showcase different aspects of local life: the 16th Marxa Senderista del Baix Segre took place on Sunday, 15 March 2026, and offered four routes, including one suitable for people with reduced mobility. At the sixth Nit de les Ànimes on 1 November 2025, there was a scare tunnel, roasted chestnuts, a pumpkin workshop and “crit o confit”, the Catalan version of “trick or treat”.
