Cellers brings together a cultural heritage attraction and opportunities to enjoy nature and outdoor activities: the frescoes by Josep Minguell are a highlight of the parish church of Sant Joan Baptista, while guided experiences and trails of varying lengths can be found around the reservoir and the Cova dels Muricecs. For planning purposes, it is worth considering the church visit, cave and trail separately, as each has its own visiting conditions.

Church and frescoes in Cellers

Sant Joan Baptista de Cellers is the parish church of the village. It was completely rebuilt in the 18th century and then rededicated as Sant Joan Baptista. The frescoes inside are by Josep Minguell. Their religious symbolism draws on themes from the folk culture of the Pyrenees. The church thus brings together the history of the village and an artistic language with regional connections.

A notice dated 13 March 2025 describes access to the interior via a QR code at the entrance, which is used to request an access code. Before your visit, check whether this procedure is still in place.

Guided experiences at the Cova dels Muricecs

The Cova dels Muricecs is both an archaeological site and a habitat for a significant bat colony. From 15 October to 15 May, visits are only possible as part of guided tours. Dates may be adjusted to protect the bats, so check the current visiting arrangements in advance.

Cova-Caiac combines kayaking and a walking section around the Cellers reservoir and the Cova dels Muricecs in a family-friendly half-day experience. Both parts are fully guided. The kayaking section starts at the Hotel Terradets landing stage and covers 2.5 kilometres to the cave. As organisational details may change, check the meeting point and itinerary in advance. For planning, this is an important distinction from the trails described here: Cova-Caiac is a guided, continuous experience, while each route has its own length and course.

Trails, reservoir and wetland

The 3.3-kilometre circular route Rodeando Terradets passes the village of Cellers and the Cellers-Llimiana railway station. Part of the trail is accessible to people with reduced mobility; there is also interpretive signage about the cultural and natural heritage. This information applies to part of the route, not the entire circular trail.

Another trail option is the 5.0-kilometre Terradets section of the Ruta dels Llacs. It is flat, running between the C-13 road and the Terradets reservoir, passes through the Microrreserva de Terradets, and can be started at Cellers station. The routes therefore differ in more than just length: Rodeando Terradets is a circular route that passes Cellers and the station, while the Terradets section of the Ruta dels Llacs is described as a flat connection between the road and the reservoir. This information can help you choose a trail to suit your preferred route type and distance.

The landscape around the reservoir also has its own character. A wetland formed at the end of the reservoir from sediments eroded from the gorges of the Conca de Tremp. Reeds and riparian woodland have spread along the banks, attracting a diverse range of fauna. The Barranc de Moro lies between Cellers and Cellers-Llimiana railway station. The Camino del Barranc del Bosc y Roca Regina circular route, by contrast, starts and ends at Hotel Terradets, which is right beside the Terradets reservoir, also known as the Cellers reservoir.

If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Cellers, first decide which of these types of visit matters most for your stay. For the church, check the access information; for the Cova dels Muricecs, check the seasonal arrangements; and when choosing a trail, consider its length and course. This lets you assess each option individually without assuming that they form a single combined programme.
