Guimerà’s castle, medieval centre and collections offer different ways to explore the town’s history. There are also two routes shaped by the landscape: one leads to the Santuari de la Bovera, while the other crosses the dry-stone landscape on the southern slope of the municipality. During your stay, you can choose to focus on architecture, works of art or the landscape.

Castle and medieval centre

Castell de Guimerà stands where the plateau meets the valley of the Corb River. It developed from an 11th-century watchtower on the border with Islamic territory and was first documented in 1038. Its ruins include a tower about 20 metres high, split vertically and standing directly on the rock. Its location and design give the castle a distinct place in the town’s history.

The streets also tell the story of Guimerà’s historic character: the centre features stone houses, arches, covered structures and arcades. The narrow streets follow a stepped layout. The town therefore brings together a variety of architectural details—from the freestanding tower on the rock to the arches and covered passageways between the houses.

Churches and works of art

Església de Santa Maria was built in the 14th century. Work continued until the mid-15th century, when the bell tower was completed. The church contains an alabaster altarpiece of the Assumption of Mary dating from 1940. It was made by Josep M. Jujol in a style influenced by Gaudí. The building’s history and the artwork therefore belong to different periods: the church dates from the 14th and 15th centuries, while the altarpiece is from the 20th century.

Capella de Sant Esteve is a 14th-century chapel that was attached to the town’s hospital. It displays reproductions of two Gothic panels by the painter Ramon de Mur. A visit focused on art can therefore take in both an alabaster altarpiece and reproductions of Gothic panels; the two sites offer different perspectives on religious art.

Museum and guided tours

Museu de Guimerà – La Cort del Batlle is on Plaça Major, in the heart of the medieval centre. The Terra de Monestirs exhibition focuses almost entirely on the Monastery of Santa Maria de Vallsanta. The ground floor also displays the Sepulcre de Bernat de Boixadors, by the 14th-century master Guillem Seguer, and eleven tombstones from excavations carried out in 2011. These pieces provide a distinct focus alongside the exhibition on the monastery.

The museum has been adapted for people with reduced mobility. As of 28 August 2026, guided tours of the museum and the medieval Vila Medieval de Guimerà can be booked for any day of the year by phone, WhatsApp or through the booking form. If you would like to take advantage of this option, check the dates before your visit.

Routes to Bovera and through the dry-stone landscape

The La Bovera i el Riu Corb route leads to Santuari de la Bovera and offers views of the Corb River, Ciutadilla and the Urgell region. The sanctuary is two kilometres from Guimerà, on a hill overlooking the comarca’s landscape. Beside the present-day chapel is part of the Romanesque cloister of the 12th-century Bovera Cistercian nunnery. Here, the focus is on the landscape views and a specific architectural remnant of the monastery’s history.

The Ruta de la pedra seca runs along the southern slope of the municipality of Guimerà towards the plains of Verdú. It passes old dry-stone walls and abandoned plots of farmland. The routes offer different highlights: one is defined by the sanctuary and the named viewpoints, the other by the dry-stone walls and abandoned plots.

Market and crafts

At the Fira Medieval de Guimerà, more than twenty artisans give demonstrations of historic crafts. These include blacksmithing, glassmaking, stoneworking, esparto-grass work, basket weaving, parchment work, cooperage and pottery. The participants may vary from one edition to another. Guimerà’s medieval market is held around the second weekend of August; check the specific dates before your trip.
