The landscape and architectural history offer different ways to explore Sanaüja. The town lies in the narrow valley of the Riera de Sanaüja, which shares its name. The Camí de la Font runs along the right bank, surrounded by orchards. Other features include the late Gothic parish church of Santa Maria de la Plaça, the Pont de Sanaüja bridge and the surviving gates of Els Portals. You can discover the town through its landscape, architecture and historical connections.

By the water and in the surrounding area

The Camí de la Font runs along the right bank of the Riera de Sanaüja and is surrounded by orchards. Trail conditions can change; check the latest information before setting out. La Font de Ferro is a rest and recreation area sheltered by century-old plane trees. The riverside route and this dedicated place to stop and relax offer distinct points of interest in the landscape.

Land use around Sanaüja is also part of this landscape: the area is used predominantly for rain-fed farming, and there are also almond, olive and grape-growing areas. Views of the surroundings thus take in both the course of the Riera and the cultivated land.

Bridge, church and townscape

Both style and dates are useful for comparing the buildings. Pont de Sanaüja is a Romanesque-style bridge, built between the 14th and 15th centuries. The present-day parish church of Santa Maria de la Plaça is late Gothic; it was built between 1509 and 1515. This allows the two buildings to be compared through their distinct architectural classifications and specific dates.

The bridge has two arches, a dividing cutwater and a small arch at its northern end. These structural details add a specific description of its form to its stylistic classification. Els Portals also contributes to the historic townscape: the name refers to four surviving entrance gates associated with the former town wall. The bell tower of Sanaüja stands in Plaça Major.

Religious and historical connections

The Santuari de la Mare de Déu del Pla is a rectangular building outside the village. Santa Rita is venerated at one of its altars. The description of the sanctuary thus combines a specific architectural form and location with a religious tradition.

Another historical connection leads to the chapel of the bishop’s palace at Castell de Sanaüja: Josep Calassanç was ordained a priest there on December 17, 1583. The specific date and location make this episode of local history distinct; it concerns an event, not the construction period of the present-day parish church or the bridge.

Regional setting

For orientation on the road network, the C-1412 regional road runs close to Sanaüja. It connects Calaf and Ponts and is linked to the road to Guissona. Together with its location in the Riera valley, this gives a picture that encompasses both the local landscape and regional road connections.
