Toloriu lies at an altitude of 1,248 metres on the slopes of the Cadí Massif. The village combines a striking mountain landscape with a history reflected in chapels, towers and dry-stone structures. The trails also offer different points of interest: they lead through forests, to a cave or past historic walls. You can therefore plan your trip according to whether you mainly want to explore the village’s history or spend time in the landscape.

The Cadí landscape and dry-stone heritage

On the northern side of the Cadí, the landscape stretches from the Segre River to higher elevations with black pine forests. The Torre del Moro offers views across the Segre valley. It is also the only tower of the fortification walls of Toloriu Castle still standing. The Cova de les Encantades lies at an altitude of 1,400 metres between Roc de Corb and Coll de Se—two names that are also important for finding your way along route PB1.

The village’s architectural heritage includes scattered dry-stone structures. Some are overgrown or partially ruined. On walks, you can look for and photograph dry-stone huts; however, some may be hidden or difficult to access. The Obaga de Toloriu route passes through the forest and showcases historic dry-stone walls. Residents built them centuries ago to cultivate the land. This makes the building technique legible as part of the landscape, not just as an individual structure.

Chapels, the church and local history

North of Toloriu stands the Mare de Déu del Roser Chapel, built in 1645. It is classified as a local cultural asset of special cultural interest (BCIL). Among its distinctive features is a wooden ceiling decorated with a complete, folk-inspired pictorial programme from the 17th century, which is an outstanding testament to the village. The chapel thus combines a precisely dated building with remarkable imagery.

The former church of Sant Jaume has been documented since 1575. Following a modern restoration of its roof, the church currently serves as a venue for cultural activities in Toloriu; the programme may change. If you would like to attend an event, check the specific dates for your travel period. Local tradition closely associates Toloriu with Maria Xipaguacín, an Aztec princess and daughter of Emperor Moctezuma. The story is sometimes considered a legend. The Festa Major is associated with the Assumption of Mary; 14 to 16 August is regarded as the traditional period. Check the dates for your travel dates as well.

Routes with different points of interest

Route PB1 starts in Toloriu and ends at the Cova de les Encantades. It follows forest tracks to the plains at Coll de Se, then climbs further towards the cave. To explore more than 200 metres of the Cova, you can be accompanied by a guide or someone with specialist knowledge. Before visiting, check the current access conditions and cave safety information.

The Obaga de Toloriu route offers a different perspective, taking you through the forest and past historic walls. The Sant Cristòfol route can be travelled on foot, by mountain bike or on horseback. These details provide a specific choice of transport without assuming the same conditions apply to every route. Following work in summer 2025, some sections of the route from Toloriu to el Quer Foradat were difficult: scrub and collapsed walls blocked the way. Check current conditions before setting out, as trail conditions can change.

Your travel priorities can help guide your choice of accommodation: the chapels and local history lend themselves to a culture-focused stay, while the routes described put the landscape and outdoor activity at the centre. You do not need to follow a fixed itinerary; choose the themes that suit your trip.
