Tartareu can be explored through several distinct themes: the history of Castell de Tartareu and Sant Miquel, the Centre de Dinamització dedicated to the historical, natural and rural heritage of the municipality of Les Avellanes i Santa Linya, and cycling routes. A good starting point for planning your trip is to decide whether you mainly want to explore the historic buildings or go on a bike ride.

Church and Castle: Location and History

Castell de Tartareu occupies the highest part of the hill overlooking the town centre. Sant Miquel de Tartareu stands at the foot of the castle, on the slope of the same hill. From Tartareu’s parish church, a well-marked mule track climbs the southern slope to the castle and the church of Sant Miquel. This provides a specific route to the two historic sites. Check the current condition of the path before setting off, as conditions can change.

The chronology adds to the understanding of the hill’s landmarks. Castell de Tartareu was conquered by Ermengol IV d’Urgell between 1076 and 1078. The first mention of Sant Miquel dates from 1083: at that time, Ermengol IV d’Urgell and Adelaida gave the church of Castell de Tartareu to the canonry of Santa Maria de Solsona. The present-day church was built in the second half of the 12th century, after the original building had been abandoned. The conquest, first mention and construction of the present-day church therefore represent different stages. The 1083 donation also names Santa Maria de Solsona as the recipient.

The Centre de Dinamització

The former village school in Tartareu was renovated and converted into the Centre de Dinamització dedicated to the historical, natural and rural heritage of the municipality of Les Avellanes i Santa Linya. The Centre includes a Memorial Democràtic section about Clot de les Bombes de Tartareu. Alongside the architectural history of the church and castle, this offers another area of focus: a dedicated memorial section. The former school and its current role provide a different perspective on the municipality’s heritage from the buildings on the hill.

On Foot or by Bike

Tartareu is also a starting point for planning cycling trips: it is one of the five starting points for routes in the Centre BTT Montsec-la Noguera. Check current route conditions and services before setting off. The difference between the two outdoor options can help you choose what to focus on: the well-marked mule track leads to the specifically named historic buildings, while for BTT, Tartareu is one of five starting points for routes. You can plan your visit around the subject that interests you most—Sant Miquel and the castle’s history, or cycling.
