A square tower with a sloping base, a Gothic church and a country path to the reservoir: Sarroca de Lleida offers clear points of interest for culture and nature lovers.
Castle and parish church: two views of the cultural heritage
Today, the Castell de Sarroca de Lleida lies in ruins at a strategic point on the road from Lleida to Tortosa. Its tower is visible, with a square ground plan, a sloping base, a pointed vault and arrow slits. The terms describe different architectural elements: the ground plan refers to the shape of the tower, and the base to its lower section; the vault and arrow slits complete the architectural features. Arrow slits are narrow openings in the masonry.
The parish church of Santa Maria is a small church dating from the 14th century, from the transition between the Romanesque and Gothic periods. Its features include pointed arches, a ribbed octagonal apse and buttresses. The portal has its own period and style: it dates from the 17th century, is in the Plateresque style and is one of the rare examples of this style in Lleida. The transition period describes the church’s stylistic classification; the 14th century gives its date. The portal, dating from the 17th century, represents a distinct period and style. This makes it possible to distinguish the different details without assigning the church and portal to a single construction period.
The architectural terms can be understood without specialist knowledge: “octagonal” means eight-sided and describes the shape of the apse. The ribs divide the vault; buttresses are supporting structures, and a pointed arch describes the shape of the arch. These terms distinguish form, structural elements and style, rather than grouping all the features under the single label “Gothic.”
Nature and cycling
The protected natural area of Utxesa also includes parts of the municipality of Sarroca de Lleida. A country path leads directly from Sarroca to the Utxesa reservoir. For those looking for a named activity rather than a destination by the water, cycling is available free of charge on the Camà natural d’Utxesa.
The Natura 2000 site “Secans del Segrià i Utxesa” is designated as a ZEPA (Special Protection Area) under code ES0000480 and covers a total of 7,727.27 ha. Two different scales are involved: Utxesa also includes parts of the municipality, while 7,727.27 ha is the total area of the Natura 2000 site.
Olive oil and appointments
Peccatum 7 offers visits and gastronomic workshops by prior appointment. The “Peccatum 7” olive oil estate is near the boundary of the Utxesa natural area. Unlike cycling, which is available free of charge on the Camà natural d’Utxesa, this activity requires a specific appointment; arrange the details before you arrive.
