If you are choosing a destination based on Romanesque architecture, local festival traditions and leisure activities along the Segre, Ponts offers several different points of interest. Churches and works of art reflect the town’s architectural and religious heritage; Lo Ranxo brings its communal food culture to life. A riverside recreation area and a white-water course appeal to other interests. This means you can discover Ponts according to your own interests without reducing the town to a single attraction.

Romanesque Heritage and Sacred Art

The Romanesque church of Sant Pere de Ponts stands on a terrace on the southern slope of Sant Pere mountain. In April 1931, the Republican Generalitat declared the church a National Monument of Catalonia. Its hillside location and its historic designation as a monument offer two distinct ways to explore the building.

The surviving upper arcades on Carrer Major also feature striking architectural details: they rest on thick stone columns and rounded arches. An arcade is a row of arches supported by pillars. In Ponts, the arches and sturdy stone columns together define the impression made by this surviving architectural feature.

Another subject in sacred art is the Retaule del Roser in Santa Maria de Ponts. This polychrome carved wooden altarpiece is dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary and the mysteries of the Rosary. Its material, multicoloured decoration and dedication give the work a clearly defined religious significance.

Lo Ranxo and Festival Traditions

Lo Ranxo is held on Shrove Tuesday as a communal meal and is associated with the last day before Lent. Around 12,000 portions of the traditional recipe are prepared in 50 to 60 cauldrons. After cooking, the meal is blessed before residents and visitors sample it. If you want to plan your trip especially around this tradition, check the date of Shrove Tuesday for your chosen year.

At Lo Roser de Ponts, the focus is on organising the festival: four majorales take on the main responsibility—two unmarried women and two married women. This offers a different perspective on festival traditions from Lo Ranxo, where the communal meal takes centre stage.

Other festivals also differ in their timing and character. The Caramelles were held in Ponts every year from 1999 to 2022, with the exception of two years affected by the pandemic. The ProcessĂł del Silenci revived the tradition of the Armats in Ponts on 8 April 2004.

Museum, Archaeological Site and Leisure on the Segre

The Museu Francesc Boncompte houses a large collection of bladed weapons and firearms from various periods. It also displays vintage motorcycles, tools from various trades and old toys. Visitors interested in historical objects will find several different collection themes here—from weapons and craftsmanship to vehicles and toys.

The archaeological site of Gravats de Mas de n'Olives in Ponts is protected as an archaeological zone of cultural interest (BCIN). It was designated on 25 June 1985. Alongside its church, art and museum, Ponts therefore also has an archaeological site with its own protection status.

For a different kind of experience, Parc de la Roca del Call is a recreation area on the banks of the Segre River. Ponts’s white-water course offers good conditions for fishing and adventure sports. These attractions complement the town’s cultural points of interest with riverside leisure and sporting activities. When choosing where to stay, you can therefore consider whether architecture and festival traditions or recreation and sport are more important to you.
