La Seu D'urgell offers several concrete starting points for planning your trip: Romanesque architecture, the history of the old town, exhibitions about the Alt Urgell region and regional products. When choosing your stay, you can consider which of these aspects interests you most. The cathedral and its works of art offer a different focus from the history of the streets, a museum visit or a walk by the water.

Romanesque Cathedral and Works of Art

The Catedral de Santa Maria de La Seu d’Urgell is the only Romanesque cathedral to have survived to the present day. The current building was commissioned by Bishop Ot in 1090 and completed at the end of the 12th century. The cathedral complex comprises the cathedral, the cloister, the church of Sant Miquel and the Museu Diocesà. More than 50 capitals in the cloister depict plants, people and popular mythical creatures. As you walk around, these varied motifs offer specific details to look for alongside the architecture.

The Museu Diocesà displays one of the finest copies of the Beatus of Liébana, as well as a copy of the Beatus d’Urgell. The complex therefore offers different points of interest: at the cathedral and in the cloister, you can focus on architectural forms and sculpture; in the museum, on the two manuscripts mentioned. Visitors interested in medieval art will find more than one way to explore the cathedral complex.

Streets and Traces of the Old Town

The streets also tell the story of the town’s development. Carrer Major is the main thoroughfare of the old town and was created from a defensive moat that was levelled in the 16th century. For centuries, Carrer dels Canonges was the town’s main thoroughfare; from the 14th century onwards, the canons built their residences there. The Portal Vell d’Andorra is the most significant surviving remnant of the original 13th-century fortifications.

These places offer different perspectives: Carrer Major connects its present-day role as the main thoroughfare with the history of the former moat, while Carrer dels Canonges is linked to the residences of the canons. The Portal Vell d’Andorra points to the original fortifications. If you want to understand the town’s history, you can compare these features with the buildings and works of art in the cathedral complex.

Museum, Regional Products and Market

Espai Ermengol houses the town museum and tourist office in a building dating from the late 19th century in the historic centre. The permanent exhibitions present the town’s cultural heritage collection, the natural heritage of the Alt Urgell region and the world of cheese. The topics range from the town’s history to the region’s natural environment and an important aspect of local food culture.

A guided tour at Espai Ermengol is entitled “La Seu d’Urgell la capital del formatge” and ends with a tasting of products with protected designations of origin from the Cadí cooperative. If you would like to include this tour in your plans, check its availability during your stay in advance.

The weekly market takes place in the town centre on Tuesdays and Saturdays. Products from the region include artisan cheeses, traditional cured meats, and fresh fruit and vegetables. If your stay falls on one of these days, you can plan a visit to the market as an opportunity to discover a range of regional products. If you are planning to go specifically for the market, check the market day in advance.

Walk and Route along the Valira

Parc del Segre is a good place for a walk and a refreshment break. Route 8, by contrast, starts in Parc del Valira and follows the lower course of the Valira towards Anserall. Your choice depends on what you want to focus on: a walk and a refreshment break in Parc del Segre, or a route starting in Parc del Valira and heading towards Anserall. The two park names refer to different starting points.
