Golmés brings together a range of travel interests: the Sant Salvador Church and several monuments offer insight into architecture and local history, while a waterfall and nearby spring take centre stage at the Salt del Duran. There is also a long gravel loop and the Festa de les Cassoles. You can shape your stay around whether you are mainly looking for culture, scenery, cycling or local festival traditions.
Church, cross and local history
The present-day Església Parroquial de Sant Salvador is in Golmés’s old town. The neoclassical building was constructed in the 18th century and is listed as an architectural monument of the municipality in the Inventory of the Architectural Heritage of Catalonia. Its floor plan comprises three naves: the central nave and the corresponding section of the transept are higher and wider than the other areas. A dome sits in the centre, taking the external form of a drum that has been renewed with tiles. The building and dome therefore offer specific features to look out for when viewing the architecture.
Another architectural detail can be seen in the Creu de terme of Golmés. It is a Latin cross with angular arms set at right angles. The present version was donated in 1969 by the association “Fills i amics de Golmés”, replacing a cross that had been destroyed in 1936. The present Creu de terme was restored in 1994. This sequence of destruction, donation and restoration gives its history a different character from the much older building history of the church.
Another monument commemorates the 800th anniversary of the granting of the Carta de població. The charter granted the people of Golmés rights and duties. The monument also addresses the provision that allowed residents to freely administer the town and its territory. Those interested in the town’s history will therefore find not only an architectural monument here, but also a specific historical reference to the relationship between residents and their community.
Salt del Duran and gravel route
The Salt del Duran is a 4.5-metre-high waterfall on the third Sèquia of the Canal d’Urgell, at the edge of the municipality of Golmés. The Font del Salt del Duran spring lies right beside it, in a shady hollow surrounded by trees. The waterfall and spring form a shared scenic highlight, distinct from the themes of the church and local history.
For gravel fans, there is a longer route option: Gravel centro: Pla d’Urgell is a 103-kilometre loop starting and finishing at Estany d’Ivars i Vila-sana. In its final section, the route leaves the canal and connects Vilanova de Bellpuig and Golmés. The distance and loop format are useful details if you are considering cycling as a separate part of your trip. They also distinguish this tour from a visit to individual architectural or scenic sites.
Festa de les Cassoles and classic vehicles
The programme for the Festa de les Cassoles includes preparing cassoles at the Parc del Centenari. Another event is Golmés’s Trobada de Vehicles Clàssics. It is for vehicles that are more than 25 years old and in good condition. The vehicle criteria put the focus on something quite different from the culinary festival tradition.
If you are looking for a holiday apartment for a trip to Golmés, you can start with your own interests: architecture and local history, the waterfall and spring, festival traditions or gravel cycling. The 103-kilometre loop is a different part of a trip from exploring individual buildings or the scenic spot on the Canal d’Urgell.
