For a journey of discovery in Ansovell, hiking and history go hand in hand: the CamĂ de Boscalt crosses fields to Coll de Boscalt, while Sant MartĂ de Ansovell, a ruin with Romanesque elements, offers a distinct focus on cultural history. The area also has striking landscape features and memories of historic routes through Cerdanya. This lets you explore the place through different themes without combining them into a single route.
Hiking with clear landmarks
The CamĂ de Boscalt starts on Carrer de la Canaleta in Ansovell and crosses the village fields to Coll de Boscalt. Along the way, the fields offer views of Cava on the opposite side of the valley. The starting point, route and endpoint are clearly identified; the trail links a specific destination with a view of the other side of the valley. If you are comparing hiking trails by their routes, these three landmarks are a good place to start.
The GR 150 also has a clearly defined starting point in Ansovell: its fifth stage begins here. By contrast, a shared stage of the GR 3 and GR 150 is described as running along the rugged northern side of the Serra del CadĂ, on the boundaries of the Parc Natural del CadĂ-MoixerĂł. The descriptions have different points of focus: the starting point is specified for the fifth stage, while the landscape along the route is described for the shared stage. Trail conditions can change seasonally; check them before your hike.
Landscape and distinctive natural features
The Bosc d’Ansovell belongs to the village’s residents and is one of the best-preserved landscape areas in the comarca. Local ownership and the area’s conservation value give the surroundings a distinct character beyond the descriptions of individual trails.
Near Ansovell stands the Boix de Boscalt, a large, distinctive shrub. It may be more than 500 years old and could be one of the oldest shrubs in the Pyrenees. Its possible age and the comparison make it a notable natural feature, though its age should not be considered certain. If you are interested in natural and landscape history, this is a landmark in its own right alongside the hiking trails.
Romanesque buildings and historic places
Sant MartĂ de Ansovell is a ruin with a rectangular nave and a semicircular apse. It was first mentioned in a document in 1037. Its location is also precisely identified: the church stands beside the road, just before the entrance to the village. The nave forms the rectangular main part of the building; the semicircular apse is another clearly recognizable feature of its architecture.
The Santuari de la Mare de Déu de Boscalt is nearby. The sanctuary is documented from the 13th century and was probably a pre-Christian place of worship. The first documented mention of Sant Martà dates to 1037, while the sanctuary’s documented history goes back to the 13th century. Its interpretation as a pre-Christian place of worship remains probable, not certain.
Routes and the history of Cerdanya
There was an inn at Boscalt that served as a stopping point on the Camà Cardoner or Camà de la Sal. Salt from Cardona was distributed from there throughout Cerdanya. This historic connection links a former resting place with trade between named locations, adding another layer of significance to the area’s routes.
Castell d’Ansovell is also part of the history of these passages: the castle was one of the castles that defended the Baridà gorge. The gorge formed a passage between Alt Urgell and Cerdanya. No visible remains of the fortress survive. Together with the inn at Boscalt, this connection shows the role that routes and crossings played in the history of the area.
