In La Noguera, archaeological sites meet protected natural areas and the offerings of Parc Astronòmic del Montsec. When planning a trip, visitors can choose different focuses: Balaguer’s history, prehistoric monuments, hands-on archaeology activities or a visit beneath the starry sky. The specific locations and their conditions provide useful guidance.

History and archaeology in Balaguer and Seró

At Parc Arqueològic del Pla d’Almatà, visitors can trace the Andalusian period through preserved structures. Pla d’Almatà is considered the largest preserved archaeological site from this period in Catalonia. The archaeological park includes four excavated and musealised houses and two sections of street. About 700 metres of the wall remain—a rough length that gives a sense of the scale of the surviving complex.

Castell Formós also reveals several layers of history. Balaguer Castle has been known by this name since the late Middle Ages. A palace was already built in the castell in the mid-11th century, decorated with refined, polychrome plasterwork. At Museu de la Noguera, visitors can continue exploring Balaguer’s archaeological heritage: the museum was founded in 1983 to manage this heritage.

A much earlier period is represented by the megalithic complex of Seró, which has been dated to the middle of the first half of the 3rd millennium BCE. The seven-metre-high statue-menhir of Seró is described as the tallest statue-menhir in Europe. In Camarasa, the rock paintings of Cova del Tabac are a World Heritage Site. These places offer different ways to explore the past and cultural heritage, from prehistoric remains to medieval architecture.

Montsec: landscape and stargazing

The Montsec landscape combines striking changes in elevation with distinctive natural features. Its cliffs reach heights of up to 500 metres. Among the plants that grow there is Petrocoptis montsincciana, a species found only in Montsec. The Serra del Montsec was formed from a former marine basin and reaches 1,676 metres above sea level.

When visiting Parc Astronòmic del Montsec, getting there is especially important: the facility is in the municipality of Àger, 3.5 kilometres from the town centre, on the road to Coll d’Ares. It is not accessible by public transport; the only options are a private vehicle or a chartered bus. Check these access details before setting out. On site, guided tours are available of L’Ull del Montsec and Parc dels Telescopis, as well as a self-guided visit to the astronomy exhibition. During night visits, the Moon, planets, nebulae and galaxies may be observed, depending on conditions.

Hands-on activities and other excursions

Espai Orígens presents archaeological heritage through hands-on activities for visitors of all ages. Its offerings include visits to the Roca dels Bous archaeological site and the “Archaeologist for a Day” activity at the Sant Llorenç de Montgai Archaeological Park. Visits to the Camarasa hydroelectric power station can also be arranged through Espai Orígens. At Cap del Pont de Balaguer, the organisation arranges visits to the El Merengue memorial site.

In Balaguer, Centre d’Interpretació de l’Or del Segre adds a hands-on activity to the archaeological themes: visitors can pan for gold there using an Ábaco. The centre is located in an extension to the Molí de l’Esquerrà mill building. Advance reservations are required for guided tours at Museu de la Noguera. They are offered in Catalan, Spanish, English, French and Arabic; check the latest visitor information if you are planning a guided tour.

For a different thematic addition, Bodegas Costers del Sió near Balaguer offers the visitor experiences Siós Tour and Siós Experience. If either suits your trip, check availability in advance. This lets you combine culture, archaeological activities, nature and a possible wine experience according to your own interests, without turning the visits into a fixed itinerary.
