Araós offers a variety of glimpses into the past: Sant Esteve d’Araós in the village centre and the castle site of La força d’Araós to the west of the village. There is also a herb garden below the Ermita de San Francisco and a growing area with aromatic and medicinal plants. If you would like to include culture and scenery in your travel plans, you’ll find some specific places to start here. You need to get in touch in advance to visit the growing area.

Sant Esteve d’Araós and its architecture

Sant Esteve d’Araós is located in the centre of Araós and is considered an Early Medieval building because of its architecture. The semicircular apse stands out as a particularly original medieval feature. It has two splayed windows: one is in the centre and has a lintel, while the other is on the south side and has an arched top.

The two openings differ in their position and design. A lintel and an arch are different types of upper closure; the semicircular shape of the apse provides a shared architectural frame. This means you can appreciate the church not only for its historical period, but also for its specific construction features.

Castle site and route to La força d’Araós

At the castle site of La força d’Araós, a wall fragment about three metres long and a ditch that partially encircles the hilltop have survived. The site also includes the remains of a fortification and several medieval houses. They are located west of Araós, near the chapel of Sant Francesc, in Vall Ferrera.

The upper turnoff on the path from Araós leads to the castle summit. This brings two different aspects to the fore when planning a visit: the archaeological remains at the castle site and the path up to the summit. If you plan to walk the path, check the local conditions beforehand.

Herb garden and products

Herbes de l’Alt Pirineu’s growing and educational garden is located below the Ermita de San Francisco de Araós in the Alt Pirineu Natural Park, at an altitude of 950 metres. At the growing site, you can discover more than 80 varieties of aromatic and medicinal plants. You need to get in touch in advance to visit, so that a date and time can be arranged.

Herbes de l’Alt Pirineu produces aromatic herbs for seasoning food, herbal infusions, natural cosmetics, dried flowers and plants, and seeds; its product range may change. The Agrobotiga Herbes de l’Alt Pirineu is located at Carrer únic 35, 25573 Araós. The garden, the opportunity to see the plants, and the products offer different ways to explore the subject of herbs, but a visit cannot be assumed without an appointment.

Woodland and recreation area

Nearby Bosc de Virós is a particularly interesting woodland in the Alt Pirineu Natural Park. For a break, there is also the Bordes de Virós recreation area near Araós. An overview updated in 2013 lists three picnic tables, two springs, a barbecue and an information board there. The date refers to the overview; if you are planning a break around a particular facility, check its current condition in advance.

Festa Major d’Araós

The Festa Major d’Araós in honour of Sant Lliser is celebrated on 1 September or on the first Saturday in September. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check the date for the relevant year before making arrangements.
