In Oliana, you can choose hiking routes by length, difficulty and elevation gain. You’ll also find landmarks that reflect the town’s history and festivals held on set dates throughout the year. To plan your trip, consider two questions: How much time would you like to spend walking, and are you particularly interested in the landscape, cultural heritage or events?

Choose hiking trails by time and difficulty

The routes vary considerably in the time they require and their difficulty rating:

  • The Sant Andreu del Castell hiking trail is 6 km long, easy, and takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes. The elevation gain is +219 m uphill and −218 m downhill.
  • The Camí de les Fonts is an easy 8 km route with around 350 m of elevation gain and an approximate duration of 2 hours.
  • The Camí de la Serra d’Oliana is a moderate 17 km route. It has around 400 m of elevation gain and takes approximately 4 to 5 hours.
  • The Camí del GR1 – Les Encantades is 25 km long and rated difficult. It has around 950 m of elevation gain, and the stated duration is 6 to 7 hours.

The time required ranges from about an hour and a half to a six- or seven-hour hike. Sant Andreu del Castell and Camí de les Fonts are the shorter options; Serra d’Oliana and GR1 take considerably longer. The routes also differ in difficulty: the first two are rated easy, while the two longer routes are rated moderate and difficult, respectively. Choose according to the time you have available and the stated difficulty.

Scenery and trail destinations

The Camí de les Fonts links several fountains and leads to the church of Sant Jaume de Graell. From the church, you can enjoy panoramic views over the Segre Valley. On the GR1, the trail passes the rounded rock formations of Les Encantades, whose shapes are reminiscent of Montserrat. One of the formations is called “Les amoroses”. These routes therefore offer different highlights: fountains and valley views on one, and rocky scenery on the other.

Fountains, ice storage and building history

Font de la Vila was the first fountain in the village of Oliana and for many years its only one. The Pou de Gel, meanwhile, offers a glimpse of a different historic use: an exhibition explains how the site was traditionally used to store ice. The Pou de Gel has been prepared for visits; check visiting arrangements before your trip.

The bell tower also offers a tangible connection to Oliana’s architectural history. It was completed in 1778 and built on an earlier defensive tower. Together with Font de la Vila and the Pou de Gel, it offers different perspectives on the town’s history: the importance of a village fountain, the storage of ice, and the later use of a defensive tower as the site for a bell tower.

Festivals on set dates

The Passió Viva features nine theatrical performances on Good Friday, staged in Oliana’s streets and squares and depicting various episodes from the Passion and death of Jesus. The Pujada al Castell takes place on 11 September. The tradition includes a climb to Sant Andreu del Castell on foot or by bicycle, a Mass and the distribution of bread to all participants.

The Festa Major d’Oliana spans five days of festivities, with traditional and popular activities, a solemn Mass and Sardana dancing. The specific programme for annual events may vary. For your travel dates, check the relevant dates and schedules before planning your days around them.

Water sports at Pantà d’Oliana

Rowing, sailing and motorized boating are permitted on Pantà d’Oliana, subject to a declaration of responsibility. Water-use requirements may change; check the current rules if you plan to take part in any of these activities.
