Hiking trails, climbing destinations and buildings from different periods give Vilanova de Meià a variety of attractions for a trip. The routes differ in how you travel and where they lead, while the buildings reflect different chapters in the town’s history.

Routes and Outdoor Activities

Itinerary 2 is a hiking route from Vilanova de Meià to Puig de Meià and Lluella del Llop. On Itinerary 3, you can choose between travelling by 4x4, mountain bike or on foot. Itinerary 4 leads to the ridge of the Serra del Montsec. The routes therefore offer different options: a hike with two named destinations, several ways to travel, or a stretch leading to the ridge.

Itinerary 5 follows a forest track through the shaded slopes of the Montsec to Portella Blanca. If you know the terrain, you can easily reach Cova del Gel on foot from this track. This condition is relevant when choosing a route: the walk to the cave is described as suitable for people familiar with the terrain. Climbing takes place at Roca dels Arç, and you can paraglide from the summit of Cogulló. These are additional, clearly specified activity destinations alongside the routes.

Tossal de les Torretes is another prominent landmark: at 1,674 metres, it is the highest peak in the Montsec. Together with the ridge of the Serra del Montsec, it gives hikers and landscape enthusiasts two specific landmarks to orient themselves by. Vilanova de Meià is also suitable for numerous excursions on foot, by mountain bike and by 4x4.

Buildings and Local History

The old settlement of Meià preserves defensive walls and towers, as well as the remains of Meià Castle. These remains include a section of wall dating from the 11th century. Sant Cristòfol is the oldest building in the comarca; it features pre-Romanesque remains and a Romanesque structure dating from the 11th and 12th centuries. Both examples offer different ways to explore older settlement patterns and architectural forms.

Rúbies has been an abandoned village since 1970. It has an 11th-century Lombard-Romanesque church and castle ruins dating from the 11th and 12th centuries. Sant Salvador del Bosc is an 11th-century Romanesque sanctuary. By contrast, Sant Salvador de Vilanova de Meià is a Romanesque-Gothic church dating from the 13th and 14th centuries. It was declared a national historic-artistic monument on 20 July 1984.

The dates associated with these buildings make the differences in period clear: Sant Cristòfol, Rúbies and Sant Salvador del Bosc are notable for features from the 11th or 11th and 12th centuries, while the church of Sant Salvador de Vilanova de Meià belongs to a later building phase. This makes it easier to choose a cultural and historical focus for your trip rather than grouping all the sites under a single period.

Fossil Site and Autumn Fair

The La Pedrera fossil site is in the municipality of Vilanova de Meià. Historically, it was also known as Pedrera de Santa Maria de Rosanes and Santa Maria de Meià. The different names can help you recognize the site in older references.

One specific seasonal event is the Fira de la Perdiu, held in autumn on the second Sunday in November. In addition to poultry and eggs, the fair offers honey and other agricultural products. If you are planning a trip around the fair, check the date for your travel year in advance. This allows you to factor in a visit to the fair without treating it as interchangeable with the other activities.
