The area of Pont de Bar extends across BaridĂ  on both sides of the Segre. The Sant Joan, del MolĂ and Barguja streams also flow through the municipality. The river and its banks are a defining feature of the landscape; historical connections lead to Castell de Bar, a connecting route and a bridge. A stay in El Pont De Bar therefore offers both nature and cultural history.

Along the Segre and on the route

The “Itinerari 1: Del Pont de Bar Nou als Arenys” runs for almost five kilometres along the banks of the Segre through a river landscape. At the start, the route passes the beginning of the old medieval Sant Ermengol bridge in Pont de Bar vell. This brings the riverbanks and a specific historical reference together on the same route. If you would like to plan your outing around the Segre, this trail offers a clear focus on the landscape.

Castell de Bar and historical connections

In the High Middle Ages, Castell de Bar was the principal centre of this area. Castell de Bar controlled the route connecting the counties of Cerdanya and Urgell. At the beginning of the 11th century, a bridge known as Pont de Bar was built over the Segre to improve the connection between the counties of Cerdanya and Urgell.

Both historical references draw attention to the connection between the counties, but in different ways: one concerns control of a route, the other a bridge built to improve the connection. The bridge dates to the beginning of the 11th century, while the castle’s role belongs to the High Middle Ages. Together, these points make routes and connections an important theme in the area’s history.

Church architecture in Bar

The Església de Sant Esteve de Bar is designated as a local cultural heritage site of interest. Architecturally, it is a centrally planned Baroque church; its dome articulates the interior space. Visitors interested in architectural forms can look beyond its Baroque style to two specific features: the central plan and the dome that structures the space. The church thus adds its own architectural note to the story of the castle and connecting route.

Forest trail, cave and views

The “PB1 - De Toloriu a la cova de les Encantades” route offers a different focus. It approaches the Cova de les Encantades along a forest trail through wooded terrain. From the cave entrance, the route offers views of the Vinyoles valley and the Cadí. The wooded approach, the cave destination and the views from the entrance are therefore among the route’s defining features. Its landscape is distinctly different from the stretch along the banks of the Segre.

Your choice between the routes can therefore depend on specific interests: Itinerari 1 offers an almost five-kilometre riverside stretch and the bridge connection in Pont de Bar vell; PB1 offers a wooded approach to the cave and views of the valley and the CadĂ. You can choose your focus based on whether you would prefer to explore the river landscape or the forest and cave.
