Organyà brings together the literary heritage of the Homilies d’Organyà, cultural heritage and nature trails. The Homilies are currently considered the oldest known literary text in Catalan. The Santa Fe Vertical route also starts at Plaça de les Homilies, as does the trail to the Basses de Fontanet. This makes it possible to consider cultural sites and different outdoor destinations as separate highlights.

Homilies d’Organyà and Santa Maria

The Camins de les Homilies d’Organyà route leads to the collegiate church of Santa Maria in Organyà. The church is designated a Bé Cultural d’Interès Nacional (BCIN), or Cultural Asset of National Interest. One specific architectural detail is its semicircular apse, decorated with a frieze of paired arches between pilasters. This describes the church more specifically than a general reference to its cultural heritage and provides an architectural point of reference for a visit.

A monolith commemorating the Homilies d’Organyà stands in Plaça de les Homilies. The Sala de les Homilies in Organyà also houses a permanent exhibition featuring a facsimile of the Homilies. The subject can therefore be encountered in different places and forms: as a monument in the square, as a text in the exhibition and in connection with the collegiate church. The historic Tresponts route is also part of the area’s history. It connected the Urgellet plain with Organyà through the Tresponts gorge.

Mountain Trails and Outdoor Destinations

Mount Santa Fe dominates Organyà from the west and reaches an altitude of 1,207 metres. From the summit on the Santa Fe route, there are wide panoramic views over the Vall de Cabó and the Vall del Segre. To the east, the Segre River marks the boundary of the municipal area. These landscape features give the trails different directions and focal points, without making them part of a single route.

The Santa Fe Vertical route is well marked from its starting point at Plaça de les Homilies to the end of the Vertical. The hiking route from Organyà to the Basses de Fontanet also begins in the square. It first follows a wide, vehicle-accessible track to the Fontanet River, then continues along a path marked with yellow signs to the Basses de Fontanet. In summer, the Basses are used as a bathing area. The different routes therefore offer different highlights: panoramic views on the Santa Fe route, trail markings on the Vertical route or the seasonal bathing area at Fontanet.

Events and Local Products

The two recurring events also take place at different times of year. The Festa i Fira del Llibre del Pirineu is held in Organyà every year on the first Saturday in September. The Fira de Sant Andreu takes place on the last weekend in November. If you would like to plan your trip around one of the festivals, check the exact event dates before booking.

Mount Cogulló is considered a suitable location for paragliding. Another local speciality is the cured meats made by Embotits Espuñes, which produces traditional cured meats including Bull donja, Botifarres and Pa de fetge. The selection may change.
