Gausac offers two distinct starting points for a stay: the heritage of Sant MartĂ de Gausac and routes that wind through the old town or lead from the village towards the forest. You can therefore explore its culture, steep streets and the route to Baricauba Forest as separate highlights.
Sant MartĂ de Gausac: Romanesque details and Aranese Gothic architecture
Sant MartĂ de Gausac is considered one of the finest examples of Aranese Gothic architecture. Inside, there is also a Romanesque baptismal font: cylindrical in shape and adorned with carved iconography that links it to the fonts in Casau and Escunhau. Gothic architecture and a Romanesque baptismal font thus stand side by side at the same site as distinct historical layers of design.
Another Romanesque basin, the holy-water stoup, is inside beside the exit door. Its plant ornamentation consists of stems and leaves. At the entrance to the narthex, there is also a carved figure of Christ on the wall. It may have come from a tympanum of the former Romanesque church.
Old-town streets and routes around Gausac
In the old town, narrow streets intertwine and climb uphill. The Paseo de contrastes por Vielha route passes through Vielha, Vilac, the Pònt de Beussa and Gausac before returning to Vielha. In Gausac, it winds through steep streets and offers mountain views. The village is one of a series of named stops along this route.
By contrast, the Ruta Bosque de Baricauba begins in Gausac. It follows a paved track uphill to the forest of Montcorbison, known as Baricauba. A small road also leads from Gausac to the lushly wooded Baricauba Forest. The routes offer different experiences: the Paseo de contrastes connects Gausac with the other places mentioned, while the Ruta Bosque climbs from the village to the forest.
Views, a spring and seasonal offerings
Gausac offers lovely views of the Vielha Pass. Horses graze in the meadows around the village; this may vary depending on the season. Another option is the Gausac-Casau-Vielha hiking route. It leads to the Font de Santa Maria, where hikers can drink and cool off. The spring’s condition may change seasonally, so check before setting out.
Gausac’s summer offerings include municipal swimming pools in a natural setting with lovely views. As this is a seasonal offering, check availability for your preferred dates before travelling. During the Hèsta Major de Gausac, a procession takes place on 16 August from Sant Martin to the main square. If this date is important for your plans, check the dates in advance; details of future festival programmes may change.
