In the Třebíč District, themes range from a UNESCO ensemble in Třebíč to the history of printing and aviation, a steppe shaped by geology, and the Dalešice Reservoir. Visitors looking to focus on culture, architecture or nature will find different starting points for planning their trip.
Třebíč: a cohesive UNESCO ensemble
Třebíč’s UNESCO World Heritage Site comprises the Jewish Quarter, the Jewish Cemetery and the Basilica of St Procopius. The quarter has preserved its original street plan and distinctive spatial layout. Its surviving historic social functions include synagogues and schools. This means the place can be understood not only through individual buildings, but also through its inherited structure. The cemetery contains around 4,000 gravestones. The basilica was built in the early 13th century and was originally part of a Benedictine monastery. Together, the quarter, cemetery and basilica represent different aspects of the UNESCO ensemble.
The history of printing, museums and architecture
The Kralice Bible Memorial features a permanent exhibition on printing and the Brethren printing press in Kralice. The Kralice Bible is described as the first Czech Bible translation made from the original languages rather than via the Latin Vulgate. The memorial is next to the former fortress, where a secret Brethren printing press operated from 1578 to 1620. The Koněšín Aviation Museum is devoted to the history of Czechoslovak and Czech aviation. A permanent mineralogical exhibition includes a collection of Moravian moldavites, considered unique in Europe.
The Baroque castle complex in Jaroměřice nad Rokytnou offers a different perspective on architectural history. It includes the Church of St Margaret and a castle garden. The interplay of these elements is quite different from the monastic origins of the basilica in Třebíč: here, the focus is on a Baroque ensemble of a castle, church and garden, while in Třebíč it is a basilica that was originally part of a Benedictine monastery.
Landscapes and distinctive landmarks
The Mohelno Serpentine Steppe is shaped by a warm, dry local climate. Serpentinite, low rainfall and exposure to the sun all play a part. The Rokytná Valley towards Příštpo is designated as a nature park for trips and walks. The two areas offer different landscape features: one is described in terms of its geological bedrock and climate, while the other is defined by the valley’s designation as a nature park.
The Dalešice Reservoir offers a focus of its own. Its 100-metre-high dam is considered the highest embankment dam in the Czech Republic. Visitors interested in technology and infrastructure will find a different subject here from the district’s historic town and castle ensembles.
Brewery and film history
The Dalešice Brewery is associated with the Czech film Postřižiny, which was filmed there in 1980. The brewery’s visitor complex offers beer and restaurant cuisine. As offerings may change, check the latest information if you are planning a visit.
Getting there and finding your way around
There are direct express train connections between the Třebíč region and Brno and České Budějovice. From Prague, connections require a change in Havlíčkův Brod or Jihlava. Check the timetable for your travel dates before deciding how to get there.
A free tourist map of the Třebíč region provides an overview of hiking and cycling routes. It also marks major sights, natural attractions and monuments. The map is distributed through information centres in Třebíč and the surrounding area, selected hotels and guesthouses, and major tourist attractions; distribution points may change. The Horácko excursion boat on the Dalešice Reservoir carries bicycles. As transport details may change seasonally, check the latest information before making plans.
