Výčapy can be explored through a range of local themes: the Hošťanka Nature Reserve is notable for its distinctive woodland, while pottery finds, chapels and the Sokolovna offer historical and cultural connections. When planning a trip, it is worth considering nature, architectural history and historical dates separately, as they appeal to different interests.
Hošťanka Nature Reserve
The Hošťanka Nature Reserve was first designated on 24 April 1996. It includes a woodland with trees of different ages, dominated by the indigenous silver fir. “Trees of different ages” describes the varying age groups of the trees; “indigenous” means that the silver fir is native to the area. Thus, both the structure of the forest and a particular native tree species shape its natural character.
Archaeology and Early Local History
Pottery finds from the centre of Výčapy date from two distinctly different periods: the late Hallstatt period in the 5th century BC and the Middle Ages, from the 12th to the 15th century. The first written mention of Výčapy dates to 1104. The oldest date associated with the pottery therefore predates this mention by a considerable margin; the medieval finds add another period to the chronological picture. Archaeological finds and a written mention are different historical points of reference.
Chapels and Historic Buildings
The Chapel of Saints Cyril and Methodius was built in 1885 in the Neo-Baroque style and consecrated on 26 October 1890. The builders named were master mason Ignác Suchánek and master carpenter František Trojan from Lesonice; construction cost 1,100 gulden. Neo-Baroque refers to a later revival of Baroque design and adds a stylistic classification to the specific details of the construction and consecration dates.
Kaplička na Láně is distinct from this chapel: it is considered the oldest building in Výčapy. A statue of Saint Florian dates from 1754; there are also several crosses. The statue provides an earlier date than the 19th-century Chapel of Saints Cyril and Methodius. In this way, a building considered the oldest, a dated religious object and a chapel with precisely stated construction and consecration dates can be understood as different historical aspects.
According to local tradition, underground passages are said to lead from some houses to the municipality of Šebkovice. This story adds another kind of historical connection to the local history, distinct from the specifically dated buildings.
The Sokolovna: Sport and Culture
The Sokolovna in Výčapy is used for sporting and cultural activities. It was ceremonially opened on 10 September 1922, and amateur theatre was performed there from 1922. The opening and the start of amateur theatre therefore took place in the same year: one marks a specific date in the building’s history, while the other marks the beginning of a cultural practice. Unlike the chapels, the Sokolovna is notable for its sporting and cultural use and its theatrical history.
