Martínkov combines a Hussite past, significant church architecture and a strong folklore tradition. Two perspectives can help you plan your trip: the town’s historical themes and the cultural events whose dates may be key to your visit.

Hussite History and the Jordán Pond

The former fortress of Martínkov is first mentioned in 1368. It developed into a centre of radical Hussitism in Moravia. The town’s history therefore extends beyond individual buildings and is also connected with an important religious movement in the region.

Another notable place is Jordán Pond. According to local tradition, Hussites baptised their children there. The fortress and the pond thus represent two different connections to the Hussite past: Martínkov’s historical role and a local tradition.

The Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary

The Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary is a defining landmark of Martínkov and the surrounding area. It is considered an early Baroque building. Its medieval core and late Gothic polygonal chancel are joined by a tower dating from the second half of the 16th century and a nave built in 1713.

The later construction phases can also be dated: the parish church was repaired in 1671 and remodelled in the Baroque style in 1713. It has been listed as an immovable cultural monument since 1958. These dates show why the church cannot be reduced to a single year of construction: its appearance brings together several periods.

Václav Kosmák and Martínkov’s Cultural Life

The Václav Kosmák Museum has an exhibition dedicated to the priest, writer, translator and Czech national revivalist, who was born in Martínkov. Excerpts from his biography are also on display. This personal and literary history complements the town’s architectural history.

The Martínkovské krojované hody have been celebrated since 1982. They include a Sunday folklore procession and dance performances beneath the maypole. The folklore ensemble Džbánek and Martínek is also connected with the region: since 1987, it has used material from Horácko in its dances. The Jordán choir performs sacred, folk and folkloric music. To this day, Sokolovna remains an important meeting place for social and cultural life in Martínkov.

Event Dates and Practical Information

On 1 August 2026, Martínkov hosted the 15th edition of the “Pocta Emilu Zátopkovi” relay marathon. If you plan to travel for a future edition, check the date in advance. The specific date is also important when planning a trip to the Martínkovské krojované hody.

For a meal, the Pohostinství Martínkov pub offers a daily menu from 10:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Check the opening details before your visit.
