The municipal bell tower in Zvěrkovice dates from 1854. Together with chapels, memorial sites and the Polepšil Pond, it offers various ways to explore cultural history and nature during a stay.
Local history across several periods
Zvěrkovice was already in existence in the first half of the 14th century. Before the Thirty Years’ War, the village had 26 farmsteads; during the wars, nine of them fell into disrepair. These figures offer insight into the settlement’s early history and make clear that the village’s history began long before the construction of its later cultural monuments.
Dated buildings and memorial sites include the municipal bell tower from 1854 and the Chapel of the Guardian Angel, built in 1902. The memorial to those who fell in the First World War was unveiled on 2 September 1928. This chronology links a 19th-century structure with a chapel and memorial site from the early 20th century; at the same time, the building history and remembrance of the fallen represent distinct themes.
Chapels and crosses in the village
The Chapel of St Anne stands beside a field path to Lažínky. The Chapel of the Holy Trinity is located on the outskirts of Zvěrkovice. East of the village, on the road to Hostim, is the Chapel of St Cyril and St Methodius: a small Neoclassical niche chapel. The locations of the three chapels are clearly distinct—a field path, the edge of the village and a site east of the village on the road to Hostim.
Stone and iron crosses can also be found at other sites within the cadastral area. They broaden the focus beyond individual chapels to include several cultural sites across the municipality. Those interested in religious and historical markers will find not just one named site, but a variety of motifs and locations that can be distinguished from one another when exploring the village.
The local cultural scene also includes the Zvěrkovice amateur theatre group, which has been active since 2009. It adds another cultural theme to the buildings and memorial sites. This does not provide specific performance dates; when planning a visit, the group’s history can therefore be considered separately from planning to attend a particular performance.
Nature and leisure
The Polepšil Pond is a habitat for wild ducks, and swans regularly nest there. Birdlife adds a connection with nature to the range of local interests, although wildlife sightings may vary with the seasons. In one place, cultural monuments and local history sit alongside a named bird habitat, without requiring the same kind of activity.
You can play tennis, football, basketball and other ball sports on the multi-purpose sports court. It is freely accessible to the public, including holidaymakers. Check local access conditions before using it; individual facilities may change. The sports court can thus be considered as a leisure option in its own right, separate from the village’s historical and natural points of interest.
Getting around and routes
A class II road runs through Zvěrkovice towards Hostim. An entry published in 2009 for the trekking route “From Buďovice via Jevi to Olbramkostel” also passes through Zvěrkovice. If you are planning to travel along this route, check the current road and route conditions beforehand. This keeps the documented route and the practical planning of your journey clearly distinct.
