Střítež lies about two kilometres south of Třebíč, towards Znojmo. The Romanesque Church of St. Mark, chapels, a bell tower on the village square and several memorial sites give the municipality a distinct cultural and historical focus. There are also marked hiking trails, cycling routes through forests and past ponds, and leisure activities to suit a range of interests. If you are looking for a hotel in Střítež, you can plan your stay around whether you are mainly interested in historic buildings and local history, or in exercise and activities.
The Church of St. Mark and its surroundings
As a Romanesque church dating from the early 13th century, St. Mark’s is one of the oldest surviving monuments of medieval religious architecture. The building has a single nave and faces east; the altar also faces east. “Single-nave” describes a floor plan with one main nave, while the eastward orientation refers to the alignment of the religious space and the altar. The church thus offers a clear example of both its architectural form and its orientation.
The church complex includes a cemetery enclosed by a rubble-stone wall, with a two-leaf wrought-iron entrance gate, as well as a mortuary built into the north-west corner of the perimeter wall. The Baroque chapel with mortuary beside the church in the cemetery is a cultural monument. The chapel was built in 1648 by Lukáš Georg Cyprianus, an official of the Sádek estate. This building history adds another historical layer to the church’s Romanesque character.
Chapels, the village square and memorial sites
A Romanesque chapel stands between houses Nos. 78 and 43. A bell tower on the village square is considered an example of folk architecture from the mid-19th century. Directly in front of the tower, a monument commemorates Josef Zvěřina, a theologian from Střítež, signatory of Charter 77 and campaigner for religious freedom. The church, chapel and bell tower illustrate different forms of religious and village architecture; the monument adds a biographical and social dimension.
The historic “Libuše” well stands in front of the municipal office. According to legend, Princess Libuše watered her horse there. The story is part of local lore. At the entrance to Střítež, among lime trees, stands a Baroque statue of St. John of Nepomuk dating from 1737. Halfway along the road from Střítež to Třebíč, a stone cross stands on the right-hand side of the road; the municipality had it erected in 1876. The flat memorial stone in front of it is a cultural monument. Together, these sites offer several ways to explore history, architecture and local traditions.
Hiking trails, cycling and ponds
The cycling routes around Střítež pass through forests, by ponds and through the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands. The municipality also has marked hiking trails. Check the markings and access locally when planning your route. Activities vary from pond to pond: swimming is possible in Hodinovec Pond, while fishing is available at Mareček Pond. Swimming conditions may change; check the applicable permits and conditions before fishing. This lets you tailor your choice of walking or cycling, a swim or a fishing trip to the main focus of your stay.
