Štěměchy offers several points of interest to explore: the remains of the fortress, the Via Mariana educational trail and deep, predominantly coniferous forests. Local history, themed stops and peaceful nature appeal to different interests. If you are planning an overnight stay in the village, you can shape your day around your own preferences rather than assuming a packed itinerary.

The fortress: its form and current use

The remains of Štěměchy Fortress lie on the eastern edge of the village. The site includes two partially preserved moats. The circular castle site is about 45 metres in diameter; this approximate measurement gives an idea of its size, while the moats are among its surviving features.

Today, the site serves as a summer excursion spot and a venue for large community celebrations. The dates of the celebrations may vary. If you would like to combine your visit with one of these events, check the specific date in advance. The fortress brings together surviving architectural features and summer excursion use; Via Mariana, by contrast, focuses on themed interpretation through its stops. The two therefore differ in form: one is a specific site, the other an educational trail.

Via Mariana: an educational trail covering a range of topics

A report from June 2026 describes Via Mariana as a three-kilometre educational trail with 13 stops. Its subjects include traditional crafts, legends, hunting, the local volunteer fire brigade and a well-known son of the village. The stops are designed to be informative and playful, and are aimed at children and adults alike. The trail’s length gives you a concrete measure for planning; you should allow for breaks and set your own pace.

The report also mentions a tool box for cyclists at the back of the information board at the entrance. If you would like to use it, check on site whether it is available.

Woodland and peaceful walks

The forests around Štěměchy are deep and predominantly coniferous. They are especially popular with people who enjoy peace, nature and walks. The landscape therefore offers a different focus from the historic site or the educational trail’s themed stops. If nature experiences matter to you, leave room in your plans for walks rather than treating the forest merely as a backdrop to a visit to the village.

Finding your way around the village

The first-class I/23 road runs through Štěměchy. It is a clear map reference when locating the village and planning your journey. The village’s cultural character is also reflected in the bell tower, also called the bell chapel, which is listed as one of Štěměchy’s cultural monuments. Alongside the fortress, this brings other named traces of local history into view.
