Benetice brings together village and church history with a landscape of valleys, forests, and granite. The Church of St. Mark is the town’s most important landmark. At the same time, walking trails, rock formations, and a protected ancient sycamore maple offer further points of interest for planning your trip.

Church and Village History

Benetice was founded as a colonization village no later than the first half of the 13th century and belonged to the Benedictine monastery in Tƙebíč. Its founding as a colonization village and its affiliation with the monastery give the town’s early history both a settlement and an ecclesiastical dimension.

The present-day Church of St. Mark was built between 1853 and 1859 and consecrated on October 16, 1859. Another historic building is the rectory, built around 1760 for the earlier church. The town’s history thus brings together several periods—from its medieval founding and the rectory to the present-day church dating from the 19th century.

Benetice is also associated with the local legend “VyplněnĂœ sen” (“A Dream Fulfilled”). It adds a storytelling dimension to the local culture and the history of the buildings.

Valleys, Forests, and Granite

Benetice lies on the slope of a narrow valley that descends south into the KlapƯvka stream’s catchment area. Scattered granite syenite outcrops and boulder formations are also part of the town’s landscape. The shape of the valley and the varied rock features give the area its distinctive character.

In the vicinity of Benetice, at the edge of the forest about 300 meters beyond the settlement of Věstoƈovice, stands the protected sycamore maple “VelkĂœ Javor.” Its age is estimated at 650 to 700 years. This puts its estimated age well beyond the construction dates of the church buildings mentioned above; the tree adds a distinctive living natural feature to the rocky landscape.

Walking Trails and Activities in the Surrounding Area

The deep forests around Benetice are crisscrossed by walking trails. From Věstoƈovice, a district of Benetice, marked routes lead on foot or by mountain bike toward Čechtín or Vartenberk. For planning purposes, this gives you two specific directions from Věstoƈovice, while the forests provide a broader setting for walks and hikes.

The surrounding area also offers opportunities for cycling tourism. Mushroom picking is another seasonal activity in the landscape; species and local conditions vary. If you are planning a specific route, it is worth checking the current trail route before setting out, as local conditions can change.

More Local Discoveries

Benetice has a self-service bar with a gallery of pictures and paintings by student Karel Krejčí. Its opening hours and exhibits may change. Before visiting, check what is currently open and on display.
