Rouchovany can be explored from several perspectives: the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary tells the story of different construction phases; archaeological sites can be found in the town centre and nearby; and marked trails run through the municipal area. At Stejskal pond, swimming and seasonal boat hire are also available. Knowing the exact location of the attractions helps with planning: Výrova skála is in the village of Šemíkovice, while the hiking trail information relates to the north and the southern boundary of the municipal area.

Church, Construction Phases and Local History

The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Rouchovany retains a Romanesque core. At the end of the 13th century, a Gothic chancel was added to its eastern side. The tower adds two dated stages to the building’s history: it was initially built to a height of 15 metres in 1585. In 1610, it was completed in the so-called Romanesque Renaissance style, with paired windows, reaching its current height of 28.40 metres. The same church building thus features a Romanesque core, a later chancel and the development of the tower.

Three bells hang in the tower: those of Saint Wenceslas, the Virgin Mary and Saint Joseph. Rouchovany’s medieval and modern-era town centre is also an archaeological site. The archaeological layers date from the 12th to the 15th century.

Archaeological Sites Nearby

The medieval archaeological site of Mstěnice lies near Rouchovany. Its remains include a fortified farmstead, a smithy, stables and sheds. This offers two distinct archaeological points of interest: the dated archaeological layers in the town centre and the structural remains of the farmstead at Mstěnice.

Nature Reserve and Trails in the Municipal Area

The Výrova skála nature reserve is located in the village of Šemíkovice in the municipality of Rouchovany. It protects heat-loving oak forests, steppe grasslands and rare plant and animal species, including eagle owls and middle spotted woodpeckers.

The marked hiking trails cover different parts of the municipal area: a green-marked trail crosses its northern part. A yellow-marked trail follows the course of the Rokytná along the southern boundary. These provide two distinct geographical points of reference: a route in the north and a trail along the southern boundary. Cycle route 401 also runs through the Rouchovany area. It connects Třebíč, Hrotovice, Dukovany and Moravský Krumlov and is part of the Jihlava–Český Těšín route.

Stejskal: Swimming and Seasonal Boat Hire

Stejskal pond offers the chance to swim in natural surroundings, with grassy areas and a sandy beach. The Stejskal outdoor swimming area has parking on site and a restaurant. The restaurant may operate seasonally. During the season, rowing boats and pedal boats are available for hire at Stejskal. As boat hire is seasonal, it is advisable to check availability before travelling.

Pilgrimage Festival in Rouchovany

A 2025 event poster lists a Mass at the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, the raising of the maypole and a dance event in the market square as part of the traditional pilgrimage festival. If you are planning to visit for the festival, check the specific date and programme for the relevant year before travelling.
