Krahulov brings cultural history and landscape together when planning a trip. The Hradiště cultural area occupies the site of a vanished fortress; a yellow-marked hiking trail passes through the village. Other features include the Church of Saint Peter in Chains, ponds to the south and a railway line that runs through Krahulov. This lets you decide how to spend your time: would you rather explore architectural and local history, or take in the landscape and waterways as part of a longer hike? How much you combine also depends on whether you want to include a longer loop walk in your trip.
Fortress Site and Local History
The Hradiště cultural area, locally known as “kolo,” occupies the site of Krahulov’s vanished fortress. The fortress was founded in the second half of the 13th century. It has not survived as a structure; its historical connection is part of the site’s local history. The fortified area of the cultural site is used as a dance floor. The fortress history and dance floor therefore represent different periods in the history of the same site: the medieval connection and its stated use can be considered two distinct aspects of the place.
Church of Saint Peter in Chains
The church stands on elevated ground in the middle of the cemetery. The building is late Romanesque and was remodelled in the Baroque style; the church is also listed as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic. Its location, construction phases and heritage protection each offer a distinct way to explore this part of Krahulov’s history. The service schedule is also relevant when planning a trip: a Liturgy of the Word is held at 9 a.m. on the first and third Sunday of each month. Holy Mass is celebrated at 6 p.m. on the Friday after the third Sunday. Changes may occur. If the service schedule is important for your visit, check the parish’s current information in advance.
Ponds and Landscape
Krahulovský kopec reaches an elevation of 505 metres and, together with the stream valley, shapes the local landscape. Parný Mlýn Pond lies south of Krahulov. The Stařečský potok flows through Parný Mlýn and Steklý rybník, the ponds south of Krahulov, before joining the Jihlava River. The ridge, stream valley, ponds and watercourse show different aspects of the local landscape. An earlier ecological survey recorded 25 dragonfly species at Parný Mlýn, as well as numerous populations of endangered species associated with shallow, warm still waters with abundant aquatic vegetation. These details are from an earlier survey, not a current inventory.
Hiking and Rail Connection
The 49.5-kilometre yellow-marked Třebíčský okruh (Cesta Václava Vlastníka) hiking trail passes through Krahulov. Its length makes it a longer hiking option, so take the full route into account when planning. The Okříšky–Znojmo railway line also runs through Krahulov and provides a train connection for holidaymakers staying at the holiday settlement by Steklý rybník. If you plan to travel by train, check the timetable for your intended travel day. This gives you two different sources of information for getting around: a marked hiking trail with a stated total length and a railway connection serving the local area.
