Heraltice combines church history and local memorials with activities in the surrounding area. Its history began as a parish settlement on an old road between Vienna and Prague; the church, statues and remains of the fortress tell of various historical connections. In autumn, cycling is joined by mushroom picking.
Early Local History and Traces of the Fortress
Heraltice originated in the 12th to 13th century as a parish settlement on the old road from Vienna to Prague. Its founding can therefore be understood in both ecclesiastical terms and in relation to the historic connection between the two cities. Small fragments of cellars and fortifications from the fortress of the Lords of Heraltice remain at PanskĂ˝ dvĹŻr. These structural remains add another historical trace to the ecclesiastical evidence.
Church of Saint Giles: Architectural Features and Changes
A particularly tangible way to explore the building’s history is the church dedicated to Saint Giles. Its oldest surviving parts include the presbytery and part of the nave. The nave has a rectangular floor plan, while the presbytery ends in a polygonal form; there is also an axially positioned tower with a square floor plan. “Polygonal” describes the presbytery’s many-sided end, while “axial” describes the tower’s position along the axis of the building. This makes it possible to associate each description of form with the relevant architectural feature, rather than reading them as a single building form.
The church was completely rebuilt in the Baroque style in 1716. The oldest surviving parts thus stand alongside an extensive later redesign. During the 1906 renovation, the former cemetery chapel and the mortuary were replaced by a side aisle known as “Starý kostel” (“Old Church”). The two renovation phases can therefore be distinguished by their dates.
Statues with Distinct Memories
Two statues mark distinct historical points. The statue of Saint John of Nepomuk stands near the church and was created in 1738 by the sculptor D. Lipart from Brtnice. The statue of Saint Florian stands in the upper part of the village square. It commemorates the fact that the church survived the 1761 fire unscathed. For Nepomuk, the sculptor and year of creation are central; for Florian, it is the event being commemorated. This distinction helps visitors see the figures as two different historical references.
Firefighting Museum in a Historic Building
The firefighting museum is housed in a historic building erected at the end of the 18th century on the remains of a former fortress dating from the 13th century. A major expansion of the museum was opened on 28 June 2014 to accommodate more exhibits. If you are planning a visit to the firefighting museum, check the current visiting arrangements in advance.
Cycling and Autumn Mushroom Picking
The area around Heraltice is well suited to cycling. The dense forests nearby are ideal for mushroom picking in autumn. For planning when to travel, mushroom picking adds a clear autumn focus, while cycling offers a separate activity. Heraltice lies away from the district’s main roads, making it quiet year-round and free from heavy traffic.
