Two themes stand out side by side when visiting Kostníky: the protected nature of Suché skály and the architectural landmarks of local history. The nature reserve draws attention to forest, rock and scree vegetation; the church, bell tower and roadside shrines complement this with architecture, dates and historical points of orientation around the village. This helps you decide whether you are mainly looking for protected nature or local architectural history in Kostníky.

The natural environment of Suché skály

The Suché skály Nature Reserve lies within the municipality and cadastral area of Kostníky. It protects natural forest communities with relict pines, as well as scree and rock vegetation. The protected area includes populations of rare and endangered plants and animals; the critically endangered Moravian pink (Dianthus moravicus) is particularly noteworthy. The focus here is therefore on different habitats and one specifically named endangered plant species.

Churches and roadside shrines

The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary is Early Baroque and dates from 1696. It stands in Hájek, on a wooded ridge at the southern edge of Kostníky. Its construction date and location provide two different points of reference: the year places the church in an art-historical context, while its location shows where it lies within the village. Its style differs from that of the small Neoclassical niche chapel.

A roadside shrine from the 17th century stands on the road to Kdousov. Another, dating from the early 18th century, stands on the road to Police. The two structures are of the same type, but differ in their destination and date. Their details can be compared briefly: Kdousov points to the 17th century, while Police points to the early 18th century. These two roads thus offer different points of orientation in the village’s history.

East of Kostníky, on the road to Vysočany, stands a small rectangular niche chapel in the Neoclassical style. Its form and stylistic classification create a different architectural accent from the Early Baroque Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary. Its location, rectangular shape and Neoclassical style give you specific clues to distinguish this chapel from Kostníky’s other historic buildings.

Orientation around the village and traces of time

The historic former sole entrance to Kostníky is known as “Brána”. A modern bell tower on the village square houses a bell bearing the date 1662. The date belongs to the bell; the tower is modern. By comparison, the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary dates from 1696: the date on the bell is 34 years earlier than the church’s construction date.

Event history

Local events also have their own timeline: the numbered series of Kostnický košt runs from 2013 to 2026, while that of Kostnický košt slivovice runs from 2013 to 2024. Both periods begin in the same year, but one extends further. These more recent event dates sit alongside the much older buildings and the enduring protected values of Suché skály.
