Vícenice U Náměště Nad Oslavou offers several points of interest for a stay: the Church of St. Mark, with its early local history; a restored Lourdes Chapel; the Sedlec Garrison Museum; and a pond landscape on the northwestern edge of the cadastral area. Sacred history, military aviation and landscape each provide a different focus. When choosing accommodation, your personal interests can help you decide which of these aspects appeals to you most.
Local history surrounding the Church of St. Mark
The Church of St. Mark was mentioned as a parish church in 1376; the village was also first mentioned that year. One date therefore connects two points of reference: the first mention of the village and the church’s religious function. The church stands in the medieval village centre, which is designated as an archaeological area.
The archaeological area covers the period from the Middle Ages to modern times. A single year and a much broader historical timeframe therefore sit side by side. Anyone interested in the village’s history can consider both the early written reference from 1376 and the broad period covered by the church site.
The Lourdes Chapel: restoration and a new location
On the eastern edge of Vícenice stands the restored brick chapel of Panny Marie Lourdské, the Chapel of Our Lady of Lourdes. It was restored in 2016–2017 and consecrated on 23 April 2017. A new chapel was built at a crossroads near a pond, about 117 metres southwest of the original location. The chapel’s history therefore includes both a specific restoration period and a change of location. Compared with the Church of St. Mark, which dates back to the medieval period, the Lourdes Chapel offers a more recent historical connection.
Sedlec Garrison Museum and military aviation
The Sedlec Garrison Museum has three main exhibits: a permanent exhibition on Náměšť nad Oslavou Air Base; the “311” exhibition about the RAF bomber squadron; and the salon of General Emil Boček, a pilot with the 310th Fighter Squadron. The subjects range from the history of an airfield to an RAF unit and the career of an individual pilot. The museum also has an outdoor area with historic jet aircraft and helicopters connected with the history of the air base. The specific selection of exhibits may change.
Visits are possible only by prior arrangement and subject to the unit’s availability. Tours may be arranged as part of organised excursions, on open days or for school history visits. Arrange your visit in advance; the prior arrangement and the unit’s availability are part of planning your visit.
Pond landscape on the northwestern edge
The cadastral area of Vícenice borders the significant Náměšťsko-Studenecká pond landscape to the northwest. This natural setting adds another perspective on the surrounding area to the historical themes. When planning your stay, you can consider whether you would like to focus more on local history and military aviation, or include the pond landscape as well.
