Horní Újezd brings together tangible traces of different periods and a variety of local points of interest: several building phases meet at the parish church, the Újezdský mlýn is mentioned as early as the 14th century, and a memorial plaque commemorates František Pařil. There are also plant species to discover and two cycling routes into the village. When choosing what to focus on during your stay, you can opt for architectural history, remembrance, nature or arriving by bicycle.

Church, building phases and remembrance

The building history of the Church of Saints Peter and Paul can be read in its several architectural periods. Its core is Romanesque, with Gothic alterations added later. The tower dates from the 16th century; the church was remodelled in the 18th and 19th centuries. As a result, different layers of the building’s history stand side by side. The tower’s bell bears an image of the Madonna and Child and dates from 1509. The hill by the church also offers a wide-ranging view.

The western section of the cemetery wall also dates from the 18th century. A memorial plaque to František Pařil was unveiled at the rectory on 27 June 2019 as part of the Poslední adresa project. This precise date offers a different point in time from the older building phases. Alongside its architecture, Horní Újezd thus offers a distinct starting point for exploring local history and remembrance.

Mill and plant life

Southwest of Horní Újezd, the Újezdský mlýn stands on the Rokytná; it is mentioned as early as the 14th century. This early reference offers a different historical perspective from the church’s architectural history. Plant life is also associated with specific places: Anemone hepatica grows at the Újezdský mlýn. Cyclamen purpurascens, a protected species, can be found in the Liští fields. The two details are therefore easy to distinguish: one species is associated with the mill, the other with the Liští fields.

Near the Újezdský mlýn, there is a self-service bar and a bench surrounded by wooden sculptures of a bear and an owl. As such amenities may change, check before your visit whether the bar and bench are still there.

Cycling to Horní Újezd

Two specific options are given for cycling to the village. Horní Újezd can be reached by bicycle from cycle route 5103 near Kojetice. Another route leads from cycle route 481 at Třebíč via Slavice and Mikulovice. The starting points and named places along the way distinguish the two options and give you different starting points for planning. If you plan to use one of the routes, check the current signage before setting off.

Traditional foods

The traditional food customs add a culinary perspective to the historical and landscape themes. They include fish soup, usually fried carp with potato salad, small mushrooms pickled in vinegar, vánočka and pastries. The selection ranges from savoury dishes and pickled mushrooms to sweet pastries, adding an aspect of everyday culture to the picture of Horní Újezd.
