Želetava combines a layered architectural history with a waterscape of streams and ponds. Its cultural highlights are the Church of St. Michael, the Chapel of St. Catherine and the Marian Column with its fountain. The Želetavka stream flows through the town; several ponds lie in the surrounding area. This gives you different themes to consider when planning: the buildings in town, and the bodies of water, which are used mainly for fishing and recreation.
Church of St. Michael and Protected Ensemble
The Church of St. Michael dates back to a Gothic building from the early 14th century. It was remodelled in the Renaissance style in the 16th century and altered after fires in 1677, 1760 and 1842. The protected ensemble includes the church, the boundary wall of the former cemetery and a gate. Its architectural history is therefore shaped both by the successive phases of the church building and by the other elements of the ensemble.
Chapel of St. Catherine
The Chapel of St. Catherine is a protected immovable cultural monument in Želetava. It is a single-nave, rectangular building with a decorated entrance façade. A statue of St. Catherine stands in a niche; the chapel also has a roof turret and a gabled roof covered with plain tiles. While the focus at St. Michael is on the chronology of its construction and alterations, the chapel can be appreciated through its floor plan, entrance detail and roof shape.
Marian Column and Fountain
The Marian Column stands in Svornosti Square in Želetava and is bordered on three sides by a fountain with a stone surround. The present-day fountain was built in 1844, after an older fountain dating from 1577 had been relocated. The two fountains should be distinguished when considering their dates: 1577 refers to the older, later-relocated fountain, and 1844 to the present-day one.
Stream, Ponds and Route
The Želetavka stream is the most significant body of water flowing through Želetava. The Bouzek, Rekreant, Hadrava, Pánkův and Panský ponds lie in the surrounding area. They are used mainly for fishing and recreation; local access conditions may vary. If you are planning to visit the ponds, check access conditions locally.
A red-marked route also leads from Želetava towards Havlišův mlýn; the distance is given as 3 km. Route markings and conditions may change, so check the current route and markings before setting out.
When choosing a holiday apartment in Želetava, you can decide between these different highlights: architectural history in town, or water and recreation in the surrounding area. The route information adds a specific distance to help with your choice, while access conditions at the ponds should be checked locally.
