An oval village green by the Cidlinský potok, historic buildings and the floodplain landscape of Blatná hráz Nature Reserve offer several distinct ways to explore Cidlina. There is also an annual honey market and forests where you can go mushroom picking.

Floodplain landscape at Blatná hráz

Blatná hráz Nature Reserve lies within the cadastral area of Cidlina, covers 4.46 ha and was designated in 2002. Its floodplain lies alongside the naturally meandering Šebkovický potok; the remains of alder stands along the stream are another feature of the reserve. Blatná hráz is therefore characterised by the stream and alder stands, not only by its designation as a nature reserve.

Village green and historic buildings

The early settlement of Cidlina consisted of fewer than ten farmsteads. They stood around an oval village green, aligned lengthwise with the course of the Cidlinský potok. This settlement layout thus links the arrangement of the farmsteads with the course of the stream.

A monument to the victims of the 1914–1918 World War stands on the village green; it dates from 1932. There is also a wooden bell tower there. A brick chapel stands by house no. 40 on the road to Bitovánky. If you are interested in local architectural styles, you can compare the wooden bell tower with the brick chapel.

The Haberská stezka, which influenced the settlement area of Cidlina, also provides historical context. According to historians, it linked Znojemsko with Polabí as early as prehistoric times. Alongside the shape of the village green, this brings a wider historical connection into focus.

Honey market and mushroom picking

Den medu is one of Cidlina’s traditional annual events. At the 2019 market, visitors could find bee products, honey specialities, candles, honey gingerbread and other local produce. The specific selection may vary from one edition to the next. If you are travelling for Den medu, check the date and offerings for the particular edition.

Cidlina’s forests also offer opportunities for mushroom picking. Possible finds include porcini, chanterelles and boletes; conditions vary with the weather. These activities differ in their timing: Den medu takes place annually, while mushroom-picking conditions depend on the weather.
